The Potential of Common Beneficial Insects and Strategies for Maintaining Them in Bean Fields of Sub Saharan Africa

Abstract: Beneficial insects provide natural ecosystem services such as biological control of pests, soil formation, nutrient cycling and pollination of plants. Beneficial insects include pollinators important in the essential pollination process of all plants, and natural enemies of pests such as parasitoids and predators which are important in the suppression of pest damage to crops. Knowledge on management techniques to attract beneficial insects in the agricultural fields is a way forward to enhance agro ecosystems … Show more

“…Destacaram-se como inimigos naturais cinco espécies de Coccinelidae. Esses besouros conhecidos por "joaninhas" embora se alimentem preferencialmente de pulgões predam também ácaros, cochonilhas e tripes (NDAKIDEMI et al, 2016). A espécie Eriopis connexa (Ger.)…”

“…The use of pesticidal plants as artificial pesticide replacers has also been reported [22]. The pesticidal plants also provide ecosystem services like pollination and biological pest control in agricultural fields [23]. Tooker and Hanks (2014) [24] identified several species of hymenopteran which visited the pesticidal flowering plant hosts.…”

“…Ecosystem services such as biological control of pests, pollination, soil formation and nutrient cycling are provided by pollinators and natural enemies in many agricultural fields [23]. Beneficial insects-mediated services such as pollination are essential for livelihoods improvement as they provide assurance of food security.…”

“…Another important IPM component is the deployment of macro agents including predators, parasitic wasps and nematodes for pest control. Common predators of insect pests include praying mantis, spiders, earwigs, true bugs, ladybird beetles, ground beetles, lacewings, and hoverfly larvae (Ndakidemi et al, 2016). Introducing or conserving these predators in cowpea fields can provide effective and sustainable control of insects such as aphids, thrips, and lepidopterans by preying on their eggs, larvae, and adults and reduce the need for chemical insecticides (Mweke et al, 2020;Otieno et al, 2020).…”
