The Potential of Agricultural Biogas Production in Ukraine—Impact on GHG Emissions and Energy Production

Abstract: Renewable energy production is gaining importance in the context of global climate changes. However, in some countries other aspects increasing the role of renewable energy production are also present. Such a country is Ukraine, which is not self-sufficient in energy supply and whose dependency on poorly diversified import of energy carriers regularly leads to political tensions and has socio-economic implications. Production of agricultural biogas seems to be a way to both slow down climatic changes and incre… Show more

“…Biogas has a significant role to play in the global energy transition because of the need to transform the global electricity systems from fossil fuel-based generation to low carbon and renewable energy-based power generation. With huge biomass to biogas conversion potential and many feasible biogas to electricity conversion technologies, biogas will play an extremely important role in the energy transition as a renewable energy fuel resource and feedstock for industrial production of chemical fuels and renewable products [25][26][27][28][29]. Microbially controlled generation of biogas is a significant part of the global carbon cycle where we have a natural anaerobic biodegradation estimated to generate 590-800 million tons of methane into the global atmosphere [30].…”

“…In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one of the goals is to ensure universal access to "affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy". It is to be achieved by "increasing substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix" and "promoting investment in energy infrastructure and clean energy technology" [31].…”

“…Livestock farms generate significant amounts of waste that can be used for biogas production. The potential of agricultural biogas production is determined mainly by the amount of agricultural waste available [67]. In conducted calculations it was assumed that from 1 m 3 of liquid faeces it is possible to obtain 20 m 3 of biogas on average, and from 1 m 3 of manure, 30 m 3 of biogas [49].…”
