The Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation Inventory: Development and Validation

Abstract: We conducted two studies to develop and validate a brief self-report measure for assessing the frequency of positive and negative thoughts related to suicidal behavior. Items on this new measure, the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation inventory, were generated by undergraduates. In Study 1, we administered a 20-item version of the inventory to 150 male and 300 female undergraduates and conducted an exploratory principal axis factor analysis with varimax rotation. Two factors, Positive Ideation and Negative… Show more

“…Approximately 222 (85.4%) were single, never married. In addition to the new inventory, all study participants completed the 14‐item Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation (PANSI; Osman, Gutierrez, Kopper, Barrios, & Chiros, 1998) inventory. The PANSI is used widely to assess thoughts and feelings about suicide (see, e.g., Gutierrez & Osman, 2008; Muehlenkamp, Gutierrez, Osman, & Barrios, 2005; Osman et al, 2003).…”

“…Estimates of internal consistency and concurrent validity of the total RFL-YA and the five subscales are satisfactory (see Gutierrez et al, 2000;Osman, 1999). Scores on the RFL-YA have been shown to be correlated with the Suicide Probability Scale (SPS; Cull & Gill, 1992) and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Osman, Gutierrez, Kopper, Barrios, & Chiros, 1998) in young adults (Gutierrez et al, 2002). The scale had good reliability and predictive validity, distinguishing suicidal ideators from suicide attempters.…”
