Electrical bearing failures in electric vehicles

In modern electric equipment, especially electric vehicles, inverter control systems can lead to complex shaft voltages and bearing currents. Within an electric motor, many parts have electrical failure problems, and among which bearings are the most sensitive and vulnerable components. In recent years, electrical failures in bearing have been frequently reported in electric vehicles, and the electrical failure of bearings has become a key issue that restricts the lifetime of all-electric motor-based power systems in a broader sense. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the bearing premature failure in the mechanical systems exposed in an electrical environment represented by electric vehicles. The electrical environments in which bearing works including the different components and the origins of the shaft voltages and bearing currents, as well as the typical modes of electrical bearing failure including various topographical damages and lubrication failures, have been discussed. The fundamental influence mechanisms of voltage/current on the friction/ lubrication properties have been summarized and analyzed, and corresponding countermeasures have been proposed. Finally, a brief introduction to the key technical flaws in the current researches will be made and the future outlook of frontier directions will be discussed.

Development of a PHEV Hybrid Transmission for Low-End MPVs Based on AMT

In order to improve the fuel economy of vehicles, based on the automated mechanical transmission (AMT), a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) hybrid transmission for low-end multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) is developed. To obtain the statistics of the best-selling models, we took several best-selling models in the Chinese market as the research object to study the relationship between power demand, energy demand, weight, and cost. The power requirements and energy requirements of PHEVs are decoupled. According to the decoupled theory, a single-motor parallel scheme based on the AMT is adopted to develop a PHEV hybrid transmission. In the distribution of engine and motor power, the engine just needs to meet the vehicle’s constant driving power, and the backup power can be provided by the motor, which means we can use an engine with a smaller power rating. The energy of short-distance travel is mainly provided by the motor, which can make full use of the battery, reducing the fuel consumption. The energy of long-distance travel is mainly provided by the engine, which can reduce the need for battery capacity. The working modes of the electrified mechanical transmission (EMT) are proposed, using P3 as the basic working mode and setting the P2 mode at the same time, and the gear ratios are designed. Based on the above basic scheme, two rounds of prototype development and assembling prototype vehicles for testing are carried out for the front-engine-front-drive (FF) layout. The test results show that the vehicle’s economy has been improved compared to the unmodified vehicle, and the fuel-saving rate of 100 kilometers has been achieved at 35.18%. The prototype development and the vehicle matching verify the effectiveness of the new configuration based on AMT.

A review on research status and key technologies of battery thermal management and its enhanced safety

Summary The reliable protection of personal safety and vehicle service security has aroused the rising attention on battery thermal safety issues. This poses ongoing challenges for battery thermal management (BTM) to improve the safety by constantly learning and adopting advanced technologies from thermal management to thermal safety control. On the basis of electrochemical, mechanical, and thermo‐kinetic characteristics of battery behavior evolution under operational conditions of normal and abnormal, BTM with enhanced safety cannot only guarantee the battery operation performance but also improve thermo‐safety behavior with the heat transfer intensifying method. Additionally, via effective measurements to detect and warn the battery behavior evolution characteristics, the combination of emergency cooling, fire extinguishing, and thermal barrier adopted in BTM with enhanced safety can effectively and sufficiently suppress battery thermal overheating and its propagation. As concluded, the synthesized integration of basic BTM and its safety‐enhanced treatment can ensure the optimal working temperature range and prevent thermal overheating from propagation. Thus, the BTM system with enhanced safety has been a promising research priority. This article provides a comprehensive review on BTM with enhanced safety aiming to promote the battery application with high energy density, security, and cyclic stability served for electrification and intelligentization of automobiles. In addition, the summary of relevant research status and key technology is dedicated to improving BTM thermo‐safe design innovation and collaborative optimization, to fit with the sustainable development needs of the long‐term mechanism of energy conservation and green‐energy vehicles marketization.
