The Pipeline From Abstract Presentation to Publication in Pediatric Hospital Medicine

Abstract: reviewers may be able to identify methodologically sound studies for presentation; however, the low overall publication rate may indicate that presented results are preliminary or signify a need for increased mentorship and resources for research development in PHM.

“…Most of these kinds of assessments were done in various disciplines of surgical meetings, especially orthopedics [2,9,10]. There were only few pediatrics reports available that employed bibliometric analysis [11,12]. Research is a vital component for any specialty of modern medicine in order to explore new frontiers in diseases and their management.…”

“…Basu and Pollack [7] showed that 41% of PCCM abstracts presented at national pediatric and critical care conferences were published as a full-text articles in peer-reviewed journals with a mean time to publication of 22 ± 3 months. One such neonatal report demonstrated that only 13.7% of abstracts from a neonatal conference were converted into a publication in the next four years [11,16]. Herrmann et al [11] reported a 33.6% publication conversion rate of abstracts presented at academic meetings in the field of pediatric hospital medicine.…”

“…2 Abstract presentation at professional conferences is often the first dissemination step, but journal publication maximizes impact to effect change. 3 Recently, Herrmann et al 4 studied abstract presentation to publication rates of all research submitted to the 2014 national PHM conference. They identified a publication rate of 36% within 30 months after the conference; however, only 37 of the 226 submitted abstracts were educational research.…”

“…They identified a publication rate of 36% within 30 months after the conference; however, only 37 of the 226 submitted abstracts were educational research. 4 Barriers to dissemination of educational research through journal publication include a limited number of journals that are focused on educational research, 5 lack of mentorship and protected time, 6 and inadequate instruction on robust educational research methodologies. 2,7 Thus, pathways to publication of educational scholarship should be measured in isolation.…”
