“…PDT, a non- or minimally invasive therapeutic approach, is based on tumor-specific accumulation of a photosensitizer followed by its activation using an appropriate wavelength of laser light, which ultimately causes the generation of highly ROS within the tumor cells and induces tumor cell death [ 8 , 14 , 22 , 23 ]. PDT is almost pain-free and more convenient for both patients and clinics and has been applied to gastrointestinal tumors [ 24 26 ], including colon and rectal cancers. Because PDT does not cause essential effect on connective tissues, the anatomical integrity of hollow organs such as the colon can be preserved in patients undergoing PDT [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…169 Early clinical studies from Japan of PDT in the stomach suggested great promise 170-171 , but regrettably were not followed by randomized clinical trials so far. PDT for early duodenal and ampullary cancers and advanced adenomas has been also investigated in pilot studies that indicated promising results, but further work is required to optimize the treatment conditions.…”

“…The U.S. FDA approved photofrin-mediated PDT for patients with Barret's esophagus and high grade dysplasia who did not undergo surgery [34] . PDT has been applied to other GI digestival tumors under the stomach [35,36] , cholangiocarcinoma (CG) [37] , with a therapeutic response on unresectable pancreatic cancers [38] , and on colon or rectal cancers [39,40] .…”
