Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the inflammatory response, lipid peroxidation and muscle damage in men and women athletes subjected to an acute resistance exercise. Methods Twenty college athletes (10 men and 10 women) performed a half-squat exercise consisting of five incremental intensities: 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the one-repetition maximum. Blood samples were collected at rest, 15 min and 24 h post-test. The concentration of lipid peroxidation markers and the activities of a skeletal muscle damage marker and a cardiac muscle damage marker were determined in serum. Serum α-actin was measured as a marker of sarcomere damage. Serum levels of interleukin-6, interleukin-10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha were determined to assess the inflammatory response. Results Interleukin-6 levels were higher at 24 h post-test than at rest and 15 min post-test in men ( p < 0.05). Moreover, men showed significantly higher hydroperoxide levels in response to resistance exercise at 24 h post-test than at 15 min post-test ( p < 0.05). No differences were found in muscle damage parameters regardless of sex or the time point of the test. No differences regarding the studied variables were found when comparing among different time points in women. Conclusion Our results show a larger influence of half-squat exercises on the release of IL6 and on lipid peroxidation in men than in women at equivalent workloads.

Adult female rats were fed with a diet containing hexachlorobenzene to induce a porphyria. 5 alpha/5 beta-ratios of androstane steroids in blood were 0.61 +/- 0.13 in porphyric rats and 1.05 +/- 0.35 in normal rats. Etiocholanolone treatment of rats was ineffective in generation of a porphyria. The activity of microsomal glucuronyltransferase increased from 0.20 +/- 0.04 mU/mg to 0.77 +/- 0.23 mU/mg by this treatment. Administration of Flutamide (4'-nitro-3'-trifluoromethylisobutyranilide) to porphyric rats resulted in a decline of porphyrin excretion by 55%. The hepatic NADH-5 beta-reductase was strongly inhibited by this drug, whereas NADPH-5 beta-reductase displayed a slightly increased activity. These findings are further evidence for the involvement of 5 beta-steroids in the formation of porphyria.

The influence of different kinds of dietary fat (8%) and of endogenous lipid peroxidation with regard to coenzyme Q9 (CoQ9) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) concentrations in mitochondria and microsomes from rat liver has been investigated by means of an HPLC technique. Although the different diet fats used did not produce any effect on microsomes, it was possible to show that each experimental diet differently influenced the mitochondrial levels of CoQ9 and CoQ10. The highest mitochondrial CoQ content was found in case of a diet supplemented with corn oil. An endogenous oxidative stress induced by adriamycin was able to produce a sharp decrease in mitochondrial CoQ9 levels in the rats to which corn oil was administered. The results suggest that dietary fat ought to be considered when studies concerning CoQ mitochondrial levels are carried out.
