Mussel seed, obtained from the intertidal zone and permanently immersed collector ropes, was cultivated on ropes suspended from three rafts located at three different sites within the Ria de Arousa (Galicia, NW Spain). Sites were characterized by different levels of phytoplankton availability. The source of seed stock had a marked influence upon subsequent mussel growth; seed originating from collector ropes had higher growth rates than seed collected from intertidal areas and was probably due to the higher condition index and previous adaptation to rope culture conditions (permanent immersion) for these samples. Cultivation site also affected mussel growth; differences in chlorophyll a content and water current speed, which influence phytoplankton availability, were the major factors underlying variation in growth rate and condition index. It is recommended that seed obtained from collector ropes should be used in the commercial exploitation of this species, since it would shorten the total duration of the cultivation process by more than 10%.

-We sampled 27 month-old mussel populations grown on collector ropes in Cascapédia Bay, Quebec, to test whether density-dependent growth was present concomitantly to self-thinning, a process which was previously shown to occur in this system and thought to be driven by spatial constraints. Biomass-density curves of raw samples were curvilinear, suggesting density-dependent growth. However, at least two cohorts were present. Fractionating the samples on the basis of age yielded a linear relationship for the main, 2 year-old cohort. This implies density-independent growth and rules out food regulation in these populations. Therefore, our results are consistent with inferences drawn previously from the values of the self-thinning exponent, that is, space-regulated self-thinning. Our results suggest that curvilinearity of the raw biomass-density curves resulted from a bias caused by including the 1 year-old cohort and spat of the year in the analysis. This conclusion is supported by a model showing that samples with mixed cohorts can yield linear, concave or convex biomass-density curves without density-dependent growth. The shape of the curves depends on the scaling relationships between cohort abundances. It appears that the shape of biomass-density curves may be a useful complementary criterion -in addition to the value of self-thinning exponents -for the identification of food or space as factors regulating cultured populations. Key words:Mussel culture / Population regulation / Mussel density / Self-thinning Résumé -Le processus d'autoréduction (mortalité par compétition, "self-thinning") observé chez les populations de moules élevées sur collecteurs de naissain dans la baie de Cascapédia (Québec) a été attribué à la compétition pour l'espace. Dans le but de déterminer si la compétition affecte également la croissance individuelle, nous avons étudié la courbe biomasse-densité d'échantillons en culture depuis 27 mois. Nous observons des courbes concaves, ce qui à première vue correspond à un processus dépendant de la densité. Toutefois, les échantillons comptaient au moins deux cohortes. L'analyse des moules de la cohorte principale, âgée de 2 ans, indique une relation linéaire. La croissance est donc indépendante de la densité, ce qui exclut toute forme de compétition pour la nourriture et confirme les conclusions des travaux antérieurs, fondées sur la valeur de l'exposant de la fonction d'autoréduction. L'analyse suggère que la concavité des courbes biomasse-densité brutes s'explique par un biais causé par l'inclusion des moules âgées d'un an et du naissain dans l'analyse. Cette conclusion est appuyée par un modèle de l'effet du mélange des cohortes. Ce modèle indique qu'en absence de compétition, les courbes biomasse-densité peuvent être linéaires, convexes ou concaves, la forme de la relation dépendant de la relation entre les effectifs des cohortes. Entretanto, estas informações são fundamentais nos futuros estudos de cultivo e interpretação das características ecológicas das espécies. Entre as espécies de moluscos infaunais, o bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana, conhecido popularmente como berbigão, apresenta grande interesse comercial e pouco é conhecido sobre as suas taxas alimentares. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de quatro experimentos realizados em laboratório utilizando diferentes classes de tamanho de A. brasiliana coletadas em diferentes épocas do ano. A partir dos dados de séston natural, massa de fezes e pseudofezes produzidas e seus respectivos conteúdos orgânicos e inorgânicos foram estimados as taxas de clareamento, filtração, rejeição, ingestão e a eficiência de absorção pelo método de biodepósitos. Observou-se que o berbigão A. brasiliana apresenta comportamento similar à grande maioria de bivalves infaunais investigados no mundo. Entretanto, sua taxa de rejeição mostrou-se independente com a variação do séston o que leva a uma baixa taxa de ingestão em concentrações de séston inferiores a 10 mg.L -1. A baixa capacidade de selecionar a matéria orgânica presente no séston foi atribuído ao alto conteúdo orgânico presente no material particulado em suspensão da Baía Sul da Ilha de Santa Catarina. ABSTRACT Feeding physiology of the Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791) (Mollusca: Bivalvia)Little investigation has been carried out on the feeding physiology of filter-feeding bivalves in native species of Brazil. However, this information is essential for future studies on its cultivation, and for the interpretation of ecological characteristics of the species. Among the infaunal mollusk species, the bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana is of great commercial interest, though little is known about its feeding rate. This work presents the results of four experiments carried out using different size classes of A. brasiliana collected at different times of the year. Based on the data for natural seston, mass of feces and pseudofeces produced and its respective organic and inorganic contents, the clearance rates, filtration, rejection, ingestion and absorption efficiency were estimated by the biodeposit method. It was observed that the A. brasiliana presents similar behavior to the majority of infaunal bivalves investigated worldwide. However, its rejection rate proved to be independent of seston variation, which leads to a low ingestion rate at seston concentrations below 10 mg.L -1. The low capacity to select the organic matter present in the seston was attributed to the high organic content present in the particulate matter in suspension in the Baía Sul of the Ilha de Santa Catarina.
