“…For amplification of ITS2 sequences primers ITS3 and ITS4 (White et al 1990) were used, for EF-a primers ef1F and ef1R (Hughes and Vogler 2004) and for AS1, primers Cl-AS1F ATCTCAGTCGA ATTGAAACG and Cl-AS1R AGTAGTCGATGGCGATG TTA. The anonymous sequence was found via 454-sequencing (Roche 454 GS-FLX System Using Titanium Chemistry) of C. leucogrammus genomic DNA.…”

“…Among 18 genera of the tribe, the genus Curculio is the largest and embraces about 350 described species worldwide (Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal, 1999;Hughes and Vogler, 2004a). In most of the species whose ecological information is available, their host plant range is limited to a small number of species within a single plant genus (Morimoto, 1960(Morimoto, , 1962Hayashi et al, 1984;Fujimoto, 2004;Hughes and Vogler, 2004b). In tropical and subtropical regions, diverse Curculionini weevils are associated with figs (Moraceae), while in Europe and North America, they are infesting hard seeds such as acorns and chestnuts (Fagaceae), hazelnuts and birches (Betulaceae) and pecans and walnuts (Juglandaceae) Vogler, 2004a, 2004b).…”

“…To date, intraspeciÞc DNA sequence variation in boll weevil has been analyzed using two loci, the internal transcribed spacer region II (ITSII) of the nuclear ribosomal RNA (Roehrdanz 2001, Roehrdanz et al 2010) and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI and COII, respectively) (Scataglini et al 2006). Here, we used sequence data from ITSII and COI plus three additional nuclear loci that have proven useful for populationlevel and shallow time phylogenetic analyses of other insect groups: nuclear elongation factor 1␣ (EF-1␣, Hughes and Vogler 2004), arginine kinase (AK), and rudimentary gene (CAD; Wild and Maddison 2008). We subjected these Þve loci to phylogenetic and coalescent analyses to evaluate the extent to which they support the classiÞcation of boll weevils into three forms (SE, TW, and MX) as opposed to only two forms, eastern and western.…”
