The Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Performance of Nitrogen-Doped TiO2: Surface-Structure Dependence and Silver-Deposition Effect

Abstract: Catalysts for visible-light-driven oxidative cleaning processes and antibacterial applications (also in the dark) were developed. In order to extend the photoactivity of titanium dioxide into the visible region, nitrogen-doped TiO2 catalysts with hollow and non-hollow structures were synthesized by co-precipitation (NT-A) and sol–gel (NT-U) methods, respectively. To increase their photocatalytic and antibacterial efficiencies, various amounts of silver were successfully loaded on the surfaces of these catalyst… Show more

“…Silver particles can inhibit the electron-hole recombination process by formation of a Schottky barrier at the metal–semiconductor interface, thus leading to faster degradation of organic molecules at the titania surface [ 1 , 4 ]. TiO 2 –Ag composite materials show high photoactivity and antibacterial property, and they are promising for many applications, such as photocatalysts for waste water treatment and other catalytic applications, self-cleaning coatings and photoanodes in dye sensitizes solar cells (DSSCs) [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…The strong oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as •O 2 − and •OH, are generated in the TiO 2 -750 with rutile/anatase heterojunctions, confirmed by the reactive species trapping experiments ( Figure 6 b), triggering oxidative stress and cell damage in bacteria [ 23 ].…”

“…This technology enables the production of thin coatings on the surface of the membrane providing various functional properties, which can improve the efficiency of membrane filtration and reduce the operating costs. The most extensively studied new material solutions (including membranes) concern hydrophilic and self-cleaning properties, which are based on metal oxides e.g., TiO 2 [12][13][14].…”
