“…Matisoff et al (2017) quantified the internal load of nutrients and their bioavailability in Lake Winnipeg, and found higher values in the south basin than the north basin. Additionally, there has been much research on factors influencing the distributions of phosphorus and nitrogen in sediments (Zhong et al, 2008;Xiang and Zhou, 2011;Cong et al, 2014;Li et al, 2016;Puttonen et al, 2016). Eutrophication is becoming a serious issue in China, in particular in Taihu Lake, Chaohu Lake, Erhai Lake, and Dianchi Lake.…”

“…This result was further proved by the higher P concentrations in more eutrophic sites, such as QL4-6 and TX1-2 (Table 1 and Figure 2). It was indicated that the enrichment of organic carbon and nitrogen can result in P release through the anaerobic status caused by organic matter decomposition, suggesting a close coupling between carbon and N and P cycles [42]. Also, a hypothesis about mutual coupling and interplay between N and P cycling was presented, based on N loss due to P accumulation and P release due to anoxia, which resulted from organic matter decomposition in the process of eutrophication [36].…”

“…The OM contents of the sediments exceeded 10% for all the reservoirs, with the highest average levels observed in the Broa (28 ± 0.99%) and Barra Bonita (24 ± 2.72%) reservoirs, where concentrations exceeded 30% in the dam areas (Table 4). The organic loads that enter the reservoirs can lead to high concentrations of nutrients in sediments (Burger et al 2007;Li et al 2016). Spearman test (with data for all the reservoirs) showed positive correlations (ρ > 0.7) between the phosphorus concentrations in the water and the sediments (ρ = 0.81), as well as between the concentration of phosphorus in the sediment and the trophic state of the water column (ρ = 0.72).…”
