Spatial distribution, bioavailability, and toxicity of metals in surface sediments of tropical reservoirs, Brazil

Abstract: Depending on the environmental conditions, surface sediments can retain all the contaminants present and provide a record of the anthropic activities affecting the aquatic environment. In order to analyze the impacts on reservoirs, surface sediments were collected in three characteristic regions (riverine, transitional, and limnetic zones) of seven reservoirs in São Paulo State, Brazil. Analyses were made of grain size, organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN). Inductively coupled pl… Show more

“…Previous studies showed that the Itupararanga Reservoir faced a progressive deterioration in water quality in the last two decades (Beghelli, Pompêo, et al, ; Taniwaki et al, ). Based on the TSI, the reservoir was classified as oligotrophic in 2007, mesotrophic in 2008, supereutrophic in 2011, and eutrophic in 2018 (Frascareli et al, ; Rosa et al, ; Taniwaki et al, ). The average TSI in this study showed higher values at sites close to the main inflow (P1 and P2), where TSI ranged from 53.2 to 58.8.…”

“…1 Paiva Castro Reservoir and sediment sampling sites (1-9, surface sediment; C, core sites). The sampling sites were georeferenced using a Garmin Model 72 GPS, according to the UTM coordinate system, datum SAD69, and central meridian 45°00 (based on Frascareli et al 2018) Initial Concentration) model was used for the calculating dates and sedimentation rate calculations (Robbins and Edgington 1975).…”

“…The main channel has a length of about 26 km. The water residence time varies between 95 and 270 days and the reservoir has a maximum storage volume of 286 million m 3 41 , 58 . The most important contributing streams are the Sorocabaçu, Sorocamirim and Una rivers next to numerous small streams (e.g.…”

“…Another important source of nutrients is sewage discharge from urban areas. They mainly reach the reservoir untreated at the entrance 39,41 . These inputs can stimulate primary production and may also cause eutrophication.…”
