Hydrogen in Metals / Pd-Tb and Pd-Dy Alloys / p-C Isotherms / ThermodynamicsThe thermodynamic parameters for absorption of hydrogen by Pd-Tb alloys with up to 8.0 at.070 Tb and Pd-Dy alloys with up to 6.0 at.070. Dy have been determined from measurements of the pressure-composition isotherms at temperatures between 273 K and 473 K and hydrogen pressures up to 100 Torr. The results are compared with those of previously determined palladium-rare earth (RE = Sc, Y, Ce, Gd, Yb) alloys. The relative partial molar enthalpy of solution of hydrogen, AH:, at infinite dilution, and the standard enthalpy change, Milat. for / 3hydride formation for both Pd-Tb and Pd-Dy alloys become more exothermic with increasing Tb and Dy contents. The relative chemical potential, ApL, of dissolved hydrogen at infinite dilution at a given temperature in Pd-RE alloys decreases with a decrease of apparent H-H attractive interaction energy with several exceptions.With the exception of Pd-Ce alloys and some high solute metal content alloys, the stabilities of dissolved hydrogen at infinite dilution and 8-hydride phase for a series of Pd-RE-hydrogen systems are mainly governed by the lattice expansion of palladium by the substituent RE atoms which reduces the elastic strain energies necessary for hydrogen occupation of the octahedral interstices.

The magnetic susceptibility χ and the 1H‐Knight shift KH for the ternary hydrides Pd0.6Ag0.4Hr (0.05 ≤ r ≤ 0.16), Pd0.7Ag0.3Hr (0.08 ≤ r ≤ 0.26), and Pd0.936(RE)0.064H0 REGd (0.04 ≤ r ≤ 0.47), Dy (0.06≤ r≤0.50), and Lu (0.02 ≤ r ≤ 0.59) are studied as a function of the hydrogen content using high resolution 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, the temperature dependence of χ for the hydrogen free host alloys Pd0.936(RE)0.064 is measured using a SQUID magnetometer and the local f magnetic moments of Gd and Dy are determined. In all systems considered, χ is decreasing with increasing r and KH is negative and increasing with increasing r. The various contributions to χ and KH are discussed on the basis of augmented spherical wave (ASW) supercell band structure calculations.
