“…Given the longstanding experience with conflict encounters by involved ecotourism developers in an African context, we can argue that diminutive collective learning has taken place when it comes to taking (potential) conflicts in ecotourism and conservation practices seriously (Connell et al, 2017). In fact, the many resolutions, mitigation or avoidance attempts in African and European ecotourism arrangements have not necessarily resolved conflicts, but also run the risk of becoming counterproductive to these arrangements in the long run Pellis et al, 2018). And given these encounters with dynamic conflicts and our predominant avoidances of them, future research should explore further how and to what extent conflict avoidances play a role in contemporary society at large.…”

“…During this visit, these actors discussed how an exclusive tented camp could materialise in the middle of this specially protected area. The design of this tented camp, or 'Starcamp', was inspired by pictures of similar ecolodges established in Eastern Africa (Lamers, Nthiga, van der Duim, & van Wijk, 2014;Pellis et al, 2018). The hoteliers received extensive advice from the present rewilding consultants who had longstanding experience with similar ecotourism projects in Africa.…”

“…My aim was to understand how the mobility of pastoralists is transformed in relation to the (re)shaping of territories and access to and control of resources (Pas Schrijver, 2019). Here, recent shifting weather conditions and increased (inter)national investments in nature and wildlife conservation on community land in the pastoralist regions have resulted in mobility becoming more complex (Pas, 2018;Pellis, Pas, & Duineveld, 2018). I studied the case of semi-nomadic Samburu pastoralists at the intersection of three counties: Laikipia, Isiolo and Samburu, within the greater Ewaso Nyiro River Basin.…”

“…Contemporary anthropologists are not actively arguing against this idea, except Arjaan Pellis et al (2018) and Orvis (2001) who indicate that Africa, especially Kenya, is still dominated by tribal and ethnic wars, despite people’s rootedness in ubuntu . These authors implicitly argue that the ubuntu that promotes Keating’s (2013) “I Am because We Are” is jeopardized.…”
