Expansion of cities with population growth leads to the differentiation of urban texture, negatively affecting the accessibility of tourism areas in historical regions. For this reason, there is a need to develop tourism areas that enable people to experience the areas of historical heritage. Sustainable urban development, which is also the theory of the study, has become an agenda for the protection and revitalization of historical areas in order to increase accessibility to tourism. The Safranbolu Protected Area, which is one of the oldest settlements with its traditional housing texture and which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List in Turkey, was chosen as the study area. In this study, the aim is to examine the accessibility of historical tourism centers, analyze the spatial configuration of the street texture in the city of Karabük and determine the features of the formation mechanism of the Safranbolu historical region. The research questions are based on the impact of (1) the accessibility of the street network on the formation mechanism of the urban architecture and (2) the shaping of urban tourism areas in historical cities. The space syntax method was used to examine the relationship between the building features of the Safranbolu Urban Protected Area and the formation features of the space. Within the scope of the study, the accessibility of the Safranbolu historical center was examined through the street texture that shapes the city form using data from Open Street Map. Segment and axial analyses were made based on the current street network data of the city. The key findings of the research revealed that the accessibility level of the city’s street network was practically effective in shaping the Safranbolu Urban Protected Area. It was theoretically found that the streets with a high global integration value in the city have an impact on the shaping of traditional architecture and constitute important routes for tourism in sustainable development. The findings serve as a reference for researchers in sustainable development, urban planners and local governments who will use it to test the methodology for understanding the street layout of the historical area and improving the experiential characteristics of the users.

Kent merkezleri, geleneksel anlamda yerel ve uluslararası ziyaretçiler için cazibe noktalarıdır. Kentsel alanlar çeşitlilik ve konum açısından odak noktası olabilecek bir dizi turizm ve seyahat akışı sağlamaktadır. Kent içi mekânların anlamlı bütünsellik oluşturmasını sağlayacak en önemli nokta, mekanların ilişkisel yapılarıdır. Kentlerin zamanla yenilenmeleri ve tarihi miras alanlarının insanlar tarafından turizm amaçlı kullanma talepleri, kentin yapısal ve sosyal yapısını geliştirerek kent kimliğini doğru algılanmasını sağlayacaktır. Çalışmada Erzurum kent merkezindeki tarihi mekânların, fonksiyonellik açısından yapı özellikleri ile mekanların biçimlenme özellikleri arasındaki ilişkilerin karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesine olanak sağlayan ve mekanların performansının fiziksel ve alansal biçimden etkileniş hikayesini anlatan Mekan dizimi analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Space Syntax’ın harita ve istatistiksel çizelgeleriyle erişilebilirlik, turistik rota ve insan akışındaki entegrasyon bağlantısına dayanarak, sokak ağı ve işlevsellik performansı değerlendirme amaçlanmıştır. Kentin tarihi mekanlarının olduğu rota üzerindeki cadde-sokak ağı tabanlı kritik noktalar belirlenmiş ve tarihi mekanların mevcut kullanımının, fonksiyonellik, ulaşım ve entegrasyon çekiciliği arasındaki kombinasyonun etkileri tespit edilmiştir. Tarihi dokunun yoğun olduğu kent bölümlerinde yapılı çevre ve şehir arasındaki ilişki ağı çevre, erişim-ulaşım ve sosyal ilişkiler yorumlanmıştır. Sonuçta yabancı turistler yüksek küresel entegrasyon gösteren sokaklarda gezinmeyi tercih ederken, yerel halkın yüksek yerel entegrasyon sergileyen sokakları tercih ettiği belirlenmiştir. Küresel entegrasyonun yüksek olduğu aksların, turistler için çok daha önemli bir rota oluşturduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.

PurposeThe emerging concept of smart city is known to aim at sustainable urban development. One of the requirements for a smart city is to address accessibility inequalities. This study aims to investigate the accessibility level issues in urban transformation before and after combining different street networks for Penang, Malaysia, as a case study to reveal greater insight and helpful information into mobility and accessibility inequalities for future smart city planning.Design/methodology/approachUsing DepthmapX software, two main quantitative methodologies of space syntax, namely, spatial integration accessibility (SIA) and angular segment analysis by metric distance (ASDMA), are employed to analyse the level of accessibility for the main streets of George Town site before and after combination with contemporary networks. Integration, choice and entropy values were calculated for the study analysis.FindingsResults revealed the implications of combining old irregular gridiron structures with the existing planned grid structures. George Town seems to have gained a higher capacity for pedestrian accessibility; however, vehicle accessibility has lost its capacity. Findings further suggest that a combination of irregular structure and grid structure is essential for urban growth in similar historical contexts to improve accessibility and address mobility inequalities.Originality/valueThe study concludes by highlighting the importance of the analysis of street structure transformation to predict consequences and promote the potential to reduce current inequalities in vehicle accessibility.
