The use of limestone in lime and clinker production respectively represents one of the biggest industrial branches worldwide. Decarbonization is a crucial part of the burning process. No clear prediction method of the decarbonisation heat for a particular limestone, even in a relative scale, has been published yet. In the presented research, ten diverse very pure limestone samples from neoproterozoic up to cretaceous were studied by means of light microscopy, powder XRD and differential scanning calorimetry. The samples showed similar mineralogical compositions and relatively close calcite crystallinity including mean crystals size, but very different microstructures and the crystals sizes. DSC was used to measure and compare the heat of different limestones decarbonisation. With the exception of three samples with extremely dense or coarse microstructure, a strong correlation of 0.95 according to the Pearson test between mean size of calcite crystals and the value of the decarbonisation heat was found.

This article presents a short overview of modified cements with photocatalytic activity. First, the types and three main methods of obtaining photoactive cements are presented. The most frequently used modification method is the incorporation of a photocatalyst into the total mass of the cement. The second group analyzed is cements obtained by applying a thin layer of photoactive materials, e.g., paints, enamels, or TiO2 suspensions, using various techniques. The third group is cement mortars with a thick layer of photoactive concrete on the top. In addition, methods for determining the photoactivity of cement composites, mechanical properties, and physicochemical parameters of such materials are briefly presented. Finally, examples of investments with the use of photoactive cements and development prospects are shown.

The physical integrity and photocatalytic performance of titanium dioxide (TiO2) deteriorate with aging. Here we propose a pre-treatment with nitric or sulfuric acid of commercial TiO2 nanopowders used in coating, mortars, or paints. The diffuse reflectance is increased between 1500 and 2500 nm by 0.04 and 0.06, respectively, with nitric and sulfuric acid (unaffected by neutralization). Nitric acid causes a decrease in crystallinity and photocatalytic activity, which drops by almost 20%; this drawback is prevented by post-treatment neutralization, which allows to recover initial photocatalytic efficiency and even increase it. Treatment with sulfuric acid shows no significant effect on photoactivity, instead.
