“…The later used his nails on the wounded of the Finnish front during the Second World War [8]. The transverse locking of the nail has been described by Modny and Bambara in 1953 [9]. This lock was improved by Kempf and Grosse [10] in 1978 to the point where it prevailed over the screw plate osteosynthesis which was very popular in the 1960-1980.…”

“…Intramedullary nailing for treatment of diaphyseal fractures was popularized by Gerhard Kuntscher in the 1940s (1). In 1953 Modny and Bambara introduced the transfixion intramedullary nail, which was cruciate-shaped, with multiple holes the length of the nail to allow for placement of screws at 90° angles to each other (2). In 1972 Klemm and Schellmann introduced a much revised interlocking nail, which was comparable to the first commercially avail-able veterinary locking intramedullary nail a that was designed by Dueland in 1989 and marketed in 1994 (3)(4)(5).…”

“…The interlocking nailing which was first described by Modney [1] in 1953, has undergone many design modifications since then and has almost completely replaced the plating in the present day. It offers a load bearing-device with excellent stability against the axial and rotational deformation of the fracture.…”
