The Pennsylvanian gastropodDonaldinaKnight in the Appalachian Basin, eastern U.S.A.

Abstract: Specimens of the gastropod genus Donaldina are numerous throughout marine units of the Pottsville, Allegheny, and Conemaugh Groups in the Appalachian Basin. Six species of Donaldina from thirteen marine units are described. New species proposed are Donaldina quadroliratus, from Pottsville and Allegheny units, and Donaldina superclivis, from Conemaugh units.

“…The description given by AN-DERSON et al (1990, p. 559) is: "... one whorl, smooth, nearly planispiral, initial end slightly upturned, with more rounded whorl profile than teleoconch". The protoconch of the present specimen is closer to the description of ANDERSON et al (1990). A planispiral or near planispiral protoconch of only one whorl looks orthostrophic, especially when it is situated oblique in relation to the teleoconch.…”

“…Donaldina is abundant in the Carboniferous (e.g. ANDERSON et al 1990;Yoo 1988Yoo , 1994 and Permian (ERWIN 1988a) and they have worldwide distribution. The other Streptacidioidea (Streptacididae, Ebalidae, and Cassianebalidae) are not ornamented by prominent spiral cords.…”

“…R e m a r k s. Bandel (2002a) assigned to Royalella two species which were previously described by Pan and Erwin (2002) within Donaldina: R. eleganta (Pan et Erwin, 2002) and R. heshanensis (Pan et Erwin, 2002). This genus should certainly include some species which were also previously assigned to Donaldina, but have characteristic 4-5 cordlike ribs: R. quadrolirata (Anderson et al, 1990), R. swallowiana (Geinitz, 1866), and R. multicarinata (Pan and Erwin, 2002 D e s c r i p t i o n. The shell is medium sized, slen der, turriculate, consisting of 10-12 very slowly expanding whorls. The outline of the juvenile whorls is moderately convex.…”

“…nov. is distinguished from R. quadrolirata (Anderson et al, 1990) by the larger size and more rapidly expanding whorls; from R. swallowiana (Geinitz, 1866) by the low whorls and less rapidly expanding whorls; from R. multicarinata (Pan et Erwin, 2002) and R. heshanensis (Pan et Erwin, 2002) by the position of the spiral ribs; from R. streptaciformis Bandel, 2002 by the massive spiral ribs. Comparison with R. minuta Bandel, 2002 is diffi cult because, in the material studies, the protoconch and first definitive whorls are not preserved.…”
