“…ODD are often associated with vascular anomalies, such as vascular tortuosity, venous dilatation, increased number of vessels on the optic disc, abnormal branching patterns [23,29]. Most vascular anomalies do not lead to vision loss [29].…”

“…These vascular abnormalities were present in 81% of our ODD cases, which is a higher rate than those found by other authors: 49% by Mustonen [20], 20% by Rosenberg et al [23] and 21% (24/116) by Borruat and Sanders [30]. The pathogenesis of ODD has been attributed to a congenital abnormality of the optic disc system, which facilitates the transudation of plasma proteins into the extracellular space, thereby favouring its appearance [23,28,29]. In our study, this feature appeared significantly more frequently in the group with hidden ODD compared to papilloedema cases.…”

“…Peripapillary choroidal filling defects on fluorescein angiography have been described in patients with optic disc drusen. 1 Growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) may also play a role. Expression of VEGF has been found to be more prominent in the nerve fibre layer near the optic disc in rat retinas.…”

“…Our case highlights the usefulness of PRP in the treatment of NVD even when the pathogenesis is unclear. 1 This effect is proportional to the amount of laser treatment.…”
