The transition to the Neolithic on the East European Plain was a very different process to the Western model, featuring a long-lasting hunter-gatherer economy and late introduction of agriculture. The authors present results from multiproxy research on a 13.5m-deep core of organic deposits from the Serteya mire as part of an international research project to understand human-environment relations in the Western Dvina Lakeland.

The Dnieper-Dvina area is one of the regions in Eastern Europe which was part of a wider network of the earliest ceramic traditions, spread in the first half to the middle of the 6th millennium BC. After the collapse of this network new ceramic complexes appeared here, called the Rudnya culture, and at the end of the 6th millennium BC this manifested in changes in the directions of cultural connections. This region became part of the cultural space of the Circum-Baltic area. Several complexes within the Rudnya culture originated in different groups of Narva pottery, and are dated to c. 5400–4400 cal BC.

В ходе второго сезона Российско-Иракской комплексной экспедиции на Телле Дехайла-1 в Южном Ираке (рис. 1: 1) были пройдены до материка два шурфа, № 1 на берегу поздней поймы реки Эриду (рис. 1: 2; 3: 1) и № 2 на центральном участке города (рис. 1: 2; 2: 1). Установлено, что самый ранний слой обживания в шурфе № 1 покоился на стерильном грунте, перемещенном из поймы реки с целью защиты от сезонных затоплений (рис. 3: 1). В шурфе № 2 раскрыта система монументальных сооружений из сырцового кирпича, в том числе стена шириной 4 м, сохранившаяся на общую высоту 2 м (рис. 2). Постройка этой стены на промоине прируслового вала реки свидетельствует, что перед нами может быть участок первоначального строительства данного поселения. Характер раскрытых архитектурных сооружений заставляет предположить, что они составляли часть внутренних обводных стен священного участка (теменоса) перв. пол. II тыс. до н. э. Новые поверхностные и стратифицированные находки предметов I тыс. до н.э. подкрепляют представления о наличии также позднего присутствия на Телле Дехайла; однако поздняя фаза в пределах шурфа на теменосе представлена только полукочевым лагерем. During the second season of the Iraqi-Russian Multidisciplinary Project at Tell Dehaila-1 in Southern Iraq (Fig. 1: 1), two soundings were excavated down to the virgin soil, No. 1 on the edge of the latest Eridu River floodplain (Fig. 1: 2; 3: 1) and No. 2 in the central part of the city (Fig. 1: 2; 2). The earliest occupation layer in Sounding 1 reposes on a sterile man-made ballast brought from the river to protect the habitable surface from seasonal flooding (Fig. 3: 1). In Sounding 2, a monumental system of mudbrick structures was uncovered, including a wall 4 m wide, preserved to a height of 2 m including a 1 m high foundation (Fig. 2). The foundation of this wall was built upon a crevasse splay, a strong argument in favour of this area being the place of the initial building activity at the site. The character of the uncovered structures suggests they were part of the inner walls of the sacred area (temenos) dating to the first half of the 2 millennium BC. New surface and stratified finds of objects datable to the 1st millennium BCE speak for a later presence at Tell Dehaila as well; however, the late occupation phase within the sounding on the temenos is represented only by a seminomadic camp.
