“…Before interpreting the results, it should be recalled that the identification of mink Lpm‐system was based on two immunogenetic characteristics: polymorphism for the corresponding locus and high immunogenicity of the allotypic variants of Lpm‐macroglobulins controlled by allelic and closely linked genes of the Lpm‐family (B aranov 1976, 1988; B aranov et al 1976, 1978). We suggested that the homologues of Lpm in other species in which the corresponding protein is identified (S humny et al 1989) would possess, at least, similar features, i. e. the corresponding locus would be sufficiently polymorphic, and the proteins controlled by the allelic genes would be strongly alloantigenic.…”

“…This communication presents further information concerning the evolution of the Lpm system in American mink. For relevant preceding information the reader is referred to B aranov (1988). To recapitulate, the multigenic Lpm‐locus of mink controls allotypic polymorphism of Lpm‐macroglobulin (another nomenclature designated it as α 1 M), and it consists of a variety of closely linked genes with allelic variants.…”
