This paper outlines an integrated approach to trust and relevance with respect to arguments: in particular, it is suggested that trust in relevance has a central role in argumentation. We first distinguish two types of argumentative relevance: internal relevance, i.e. the extent to which a premise has a bearing on its purported conclusion, and external relevance, i.e. a measure of how much a whole argument is pertinent to the matter under discussion, in the broader dialogical context where it is proposed. Then, we argue that judgements of internal relevance heavily rely on trust, and that such trust, although occasionally misplaced (e.g. in some so-called fallacies of relevance), is nonetheless based on several reasons, and thus often justified, by either epistemic or pragmatic considerations. We conclude by sketching potential methods to formally model trust in argumentative relevance, and briefly discussing the technological implications of this line of research.

This paper attempts two things: (a) to give the reader a very general idea of the main outlines of what Govier has to say both about social and political trust and about trust in personal relationships, and (b) to present in slightly more detail what she says about the role of trust in acquiring belief and/or knowledge from testimony and about the reasons for trusting such testimony.Abstract: Dans cet article je vise à: (a) donner au lecteur une idée très générale des grandes lignes de ce que Govier a à dire sur la confiance sociale et politique et sur la confiance dans les relations personnelles, et (b) présenter en un peu plus de détail sur ce qu'elle dit à propos du rôle de la confiance dans l'acquisition des croyances et/ou des connaissances à partir des témoignages et sur les raisons de faire confiance à un tel témoignage.

Resumo: Douglas Walton tem tido razão em chamar-nos a atenção para os aspectos pragmáticos da argumentação. Contudo, insistiu também que as argumentações devem ser compreendidas e avaliadas considerando a função que desempenham; e, disto, discordo. As argumentações não têm uma função determinável no sentido proposto por Walton e, mesmo que tivessem, não poderíamos fundar as normas da prática argumentativa nessa função. Como alternativa a uma teoria funcional da pragmática argumentativa, proponho uma perspectiva design, a qual se concentra na forma como os participantes estrategicamente subsumem e impõem normas sobre eles próprios de modo a conferirem força aos seus argumentos.Palavras-chave: argumento; argumentação; avaliação dos argumentos; lógica informal; Douglas Walton; funcionalismo; diálogo; dialéctica; pragmática.
