The Oral Absorption of Ampicillin, Pivampicillin and Amoxycillin in Infants and Children

Abstract: Ab.rtract:The oral absorption of comparable doses of mixtures of ampicillin, amoxycillin and pivampicillin was studied in 38 children from 6 months to 6 years of age. Plasma concentrations following pivampicillin and amoxycillin were higher than those following the administration of ampicillin. N o significant difference was found between amoxycillin and pivampicillin. The oral absorption of pivampicillin mixture was further studied in 12 infants, 0-1 month and 1-5 months of age. The absorption was faster in i… Show more

“…1A). Ampicillin and enrofloxacin are both relatively well absorbed in the intestine (Eriksson and Bolme, 1981; Heinen, 2002) while vancomycin and amikacin both have poor oral bioavailability with negligible systemic effects (Jagannath et al, 1999; Tedesco et al, 1978). Both treatments reduced the colonic bacterial abundance 1000-fold compared to untreated control mice (Fig.…”

“…In children who were given mixtures and tablets in equal doses, higher plasma concentrations were found following the ingestion of tablets. We have previously shown in children that the absorption of calcium penicillin V and pivampicillin tablets is superior to that from a mixture (Bolme & Eriksson 1978;Eriksson & Bolme 1981). The reason for this is unknown.…”
