The optimization of sawtooth gratings using RCWA and its fabrication on a slanted silicon substrate by fast atom beam etching

Abstract: This paper presents scalar and vector analyses of sawtooth gratings with a period of 2.0 µm in terms of Fourier transformation and rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and its fabrication on a slanted silicon substrate by a newly proposed fast atom beam (FAB) etching method. First, the optical and geometrical properties of sawtooth gratings were investigated and optimized under the phase-matching requirement, and the 1st diffraction efficiency for TM polarization and the scalar approximation, 73.0% and 100%, … Show more

“…Whereas the angular and spectral characteristics of gratings solely depend on (1), DE is dependent on the surface profile of gratings, which is calculated by the rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) [7][8][9][10][11]. In accordance with the TIR-based grating condition, it might be a big obstacle to obtain the optimum grating parameters, , , and .…”

“…On the other hand, 2 International Journal of Manufacturing Engineering ultraprecision machining-based fabrication methods rely on more complicated mechanisms depending on the degree of the size effect due to small ratio of depth of cut to the tool edge radius. In addition, both MEMS-based and ultraprecision machining-based machining methods are expensive [11,14]. An evident disadvantage of using a lens with grooves is the possibility of losing light due to incidence on the draft facet.…”

“…3, respectively. This measured peak-to-valley depth was slightly less than the designed one due to the edge-rounding effect occurring in stylus-profiling method. Furthermore, it has been known that the large blazed angle just as the fabricated blazed gratings in this paper may cause errors at steep blazed facets and it results in change in diffraction angle and efficiency[2,5] …”
