The on-site waste minimization practices for construction waste

Abstract: Rapid development in construction industry had caused the increasing of construction waste. This situation brings many negative impacts towards the environment, cost, productivity, time, social and economy. The increasing of construction wastes is mainly due to the inefficient waste management practices in the construction projects. Hence, the effective management practices in handling construction waste should be highlighted. This study seeks to identify the waste management practices that are able to engende… Show more

“…Official institutions, referring to legal norms and rules, play a decisive role in motivating firms and individuals to implement recycling and upcycling [3]. In addition, the practice of using off-site products and components (low-waste construction technology), material-specific waste handling (waste sorting), and construction and material standardization are also important to help reduce construction waste on-site and proper handling of building materials [35].…”

“…Adewuyi and Odesola (2016) identified training and retraining of supervisors on material waste minimization strategies, use of modular design system, introducing incentives to motivate labor to minimize material wastage on site, purchasing raw materials that are just sufficient, and training and retraining of personnel on handling, storage, and transportation are the top-ranked strategies in managing construction wastes. In addition, improving awareness and education of the workforce regarding construction waste management, the practice of using offsite products and components, establishing waste management techniques for specific materials, standardization of design and material, and proper handling of construction materials are very important to achieve on-site waste minimization (Muhammad et al, 2020).…”

“…For waste management strategy to be well adapted, at the policymaking level of CMWMP the legislative approach should consider the waste prevention strategies during the planning and construction stages (Ajayi et al, 2015). This approach prominently enables to engender on-site waste reduction in a construction project (Muhammad et al, 2020). Providing scheduled training on how to prevent and minimize material wastes for construction firms was the third important technique with an RII value of 0.800.…”

“…The production of chopped steel wool fibers (CSWFs) through recycling can alleviate the aforementioned environmental issues and promote green technology in the construction industry [ 8 , 9 ]. The future of the industry involves recycling, and CSWFs, commonly made of low-carbon steel, can be used in the form of rolls or pads in brake pad linings (as a thermal shield); in automobile exhaust pipes (as an acoustic shield); in metal separation, water, and air filtration; and in cleaning.…”
