The oldest evidence of non-coaxial shell heterostrophy in the Class Gastropoda

Abstract: The term shell heterostrophy describes the condition where the shell whorls coil in one direction during one portion of a gastropod's life, and in the other direction for another portion. In the present paper, the oldest evidence of non-coaxial shell heterostrophy in the Class Gastropoda is documented in the new species Koneprusellia zaki sp. nov. (Porcellioidea, Archaeogastropoda), coming from the Early Devonian of the Barrandian area (Bohemia). A brief analysis of the occurrences of this shell's morphologica… Show more

“…A change in coiling direction during ontogeny is also present in other Palaeozoic gastropod groups but occurs within the teleoconch and therefore does not represent larval heterostrophy (e.g. Frýda and Rohr ; Frýda and Ferrová ). Heterobranch larvae are generally smaller than caenogastropod larvae (Page and Ferguson ).…”

“…The Prionopeltis archiaci-Atrypoidea modesta Community, being the first post-carbon isotope excursion community, was highly diversified and it bears several new faunal groups (see Havlíček & Štorch 1990;Šnajdr 1980;Kříž 1998bKříž , 1999bManda & Turek 2009). For example, during this period the origin of the long-lasting archaeogastropod clade Porcellioidea Koken in Zittel, 1895 is documented which forms part of marine communities for more than 350 Ma (late Silurian-Late Cretaceous; Bandel 1993, Frýda & Blodgett 1998, Frýda & Ferrová 2011. The oldest members of the latter archaeogastropod clade come from the Prionopeltis archiaci-Atrypoidea modesta Community of the Kosov area (Frýda 1997).…”

“…The new taxa described here come from weathered beds of the Early Devonian Koněprusy Limestone (Praha Formation) of Pragian age found by one of us (LF) at the Císařský lom quarry ( Fig. 1; Frýda & Ferrová 2011). These weathered beds contain a rather highly diversified gastropod fauna, which is under study.…”
