The Oblique-Banded Leafroller: Archips rosaceana Harris1

Abstract: and many others had mentioned the rose as one of the common food plants. In the case under our observation. the pest was received on some Killarney plants imported from an Ohio firm something over a year ago. The larvre evidently increased during the summer of 1908 and by midsummer of 1909 were sufficiently abundant to cause very serious devastation, the loss from defoliation and incidental checking of blooms undoubtedly amounting to over five thousand dollars. }i~ortunately the infestation started in one corn… Show more

“…pomonella. Sanderson and Jackson ( 1909 ) found unfed females had an average longevity of 162 DD (14.6 d), with a maximum longevity of 222 DD (20 d) at a constant 21.1°C. In laboratory studies at 22°C and ≈ 75% RH using the same source colonies of C .…”

“…With C . rosaceana , longevity estimates are even more limited ( Sanderson and Jackson 1909 ; VPJ and NGW unpublished observations). Finally, having the l x curve on a physiological time (degree-day) basis ( Taylor 1981 ) allows the link between models with field conditions to help explain population dynamics at various times during the season.…”

“…A survey of the literature was performed to examine the developmental data that was used as the basis for the five phenology models mentioned previously. We used the original data when possible ( Sanderson and Jackson, 1909 ; Gangavalli, 1985 ) or digitized it from graphs in original publications ( Reissig, 1978 ; Omeg, 2001 ). We collected data for the egg, larval, pupal, and egg through pupal stages separately.…”

“…The obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), is an economical pest of apple and cherry [ 1 ]. Even though C. rosaceana has a wide host range, with over 50 species [ 2 ], for a long time it was considered as a minor pest with limited damage in fruit orchards [ 3 ]. However, this perception changed in the late 1970s when outbreaks of C. rosaceana populations occurred and it became a serious pest causing economic damages in fruit orchards [ 4 ].…”
