The nutritive value of rumen micro-organisms in ruminants

Abstract: 1. A method is described whereby a large quantity of rumen microbial dry matter of high purity was isolated from whole rumen contents obtained from abattoirs, by means of a continuous process of one filtration through four sieves followed by three differential centrifugations.2. The contents of ash, carbohydrate, lipid, nitrogen, RNA, DNA and individual amino acids of the three centrifugal fractions are given and compared with values summarized from more than sixty published reports on the chemical composition… Show more

“…Storm et al (1983) indicaram a eficiente utilização da proteína microbiana ruminal de cordeiros em crescimento mantidos pela nutrição intragástrica. Porém, a proteína fornecida pela síntese microbiana ruminal é inadequada para sustentar a alta taxa de crescimento, requerido nos sistemas intensivos de produção.…”

“…A buffering solution was also infused at the rate of 2500 ml/d to maintain a rumen p k between 6-2 and 6.7, as previously described (Orskov et al 1979). Freeze-dried micro-organisms isolated from whole rumen contents (Storm & Orskov, 1983) were reconstituted in 2500 ml water daily and infused abomasally together with trace minerals and vitamins. The vessels holding the reconstituted microbial infusate were kept at Oo.…”

“…Large-scale isolation of rumen micro-organisms was described in an earlier paper in this series (Storm & Orskov, 1983). The present paper describes the results of four experiments in which RMO were infused abomasally in sheep otherwise maintained by intraruminal infusion of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and minerals (Orskov et al 1979).…”
