The non-thermal biological effects and mechanisms of microwave exposure

Abstract: The purpose of this article was to present a brief review of pertinent information regarding the effects of microwave radiation on biological systems. Researchers have been intrigued by the interaction of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and various life processes since the 18th century. Microwaves refer to the oscillation of an EMF with a wavelength of 1 mm to 1 m, which penetrates matter to varying degrees. With the widespread and ever-increasing use of microwaves, such as cellular telephones and other wireless… Show more

“…A current and commercially available mobile phone from a leading brand manufacturer with a SAR value of 0.76 W/ kg was used. No distinction was made between thermal and non-thermal radiation, because both are also present in reality when making a call and have an impact on the human body and systemic health [15][16][17].…”

“…When comparing the research works that report thermal outcomes with those reporting nonthermal outcomes in terms of temperature control techniques, thermal fluctuations, and stirring techniques for the suspension (Nakouti et al, 2017; Redlarski et al, 2015; Rougier et al, 2014; Saffer & Profenno, 1992), this division seems inconsistent and more complex than just no alteration in temperature. Besides, lack of knowledge of the mechanism of nonthermal bioeffects adds to the complexity in their comprehension (Zhao et al, 2021). Provided that the plausible health effects of EMF are taken into account properly, its many applications will be rated as significant.…”

“…Furthermore, EMR exposure increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels inside of tissues [ 40 ], leading to macromolecular changes, including DNA/RNA and proteins. This induced oxidative stress increases malondialdehyde, leading to membrane lipid injury, and a reduced glutathione concentration, which plays a key defensive role against various diseases [ 41 ].…”
