The COVID-19 pandemic has changed nowadays life in every aspect so irreversibly that there is no doubt that the educational landscape must be continuously re-evaluated and revised. In this regard, particular emphasis is given to the issues of academic mobility and adaptation of foreign students. The aim of the study is to clarify a new understanding of the issues traditionally faced by foreign students in universities in the host country and to analyze new barriers that have arisen as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper reports on a narrative research study exploring the experiences and perceptions of 42 first-year bachelor and master foreign students having come to Russia for the first time. Taking into account that human behaiviour can be predicted through language patterns, we analysed language features to compare the participants’ rational and emotional perception of the barriers to adaptation highlighted from their narratives. The findings suggest that almost all issues traditionally faced by foreign students have received a new understanding or have changed their hierarchy in their perception. Contemporary challenges have also created new barriers to adaptation. Temporalities and restrictions in physical movement received special emphasis as an obstacle to adaptation of foreign students. In the context of the total transformation that awaits higher education after the end of the pandemic and its transition to a hybrid format, the results of this study can be used by academic developers to establish a system of foreign students’ psychological adaptation.

Bu çalışma, yükseköğretimdeki uluslararasılaşma ve uluslararası öğrenci sayısıyla ülkenin dünyadaki imajı arasında doğrudan bir ilişki olduğu gerçeğinden hareketle, Selçuk Üniversitesi örneği üzerinden Türkiye'deki yükseköğretim kurumlarındaki lisans ve lisansüstü düzeydeki uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkiye imajını ölçmeyi amaçlamıştır. Çalışmada toplamda 30 sorudan oluşan 222 katılımcının yer aldığı bir anket çalışması gerçekleştirilmiş ve uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkiye imajı, "eğitim, sosyal imkânlar, sosyal çevre/şehir hayatı ve Türkiye algısı" olmak üzere toplamda 2 kategori ve 2. kategorinin altında yer alan 4 alt kategori üzerinden ölçülmüştür. Anket uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkiye'ye gelmeden önceki ve geldikten sonraki Türkiye algısını da ölçecek şekilde tasarlanmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular sonucunda uluslararası öğrencilerin Türkiye hakkında yüksek düzeyde olumlu imaja sahip oldukları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Türkiye'nin yükseköğretim alanında son dönemde yaptığı reformlarla bünyesine çektiği uluslararası öğrenci sayısının artmış olması ve uluslararası öğrenciler üzerinden daha fazla sayıda bölge ve ülkeye ulaşılmaya başlanmış olması bu konuda kapsayıcı ve uzun dönemli bir politika üretilmesini de zorunlu kılmaktadır.

Defining the cultural care needs of Syrian university students in Türkiye using Leininger's Sunrise Model

Nurses are expected to recognize the cultures of their patients and provide suitable medical service. Accordingly, the medical services to be provided to foreign students who come from different cultures and whose numbers are on the rise should be adapted to the cultures of these students. This study aimed to use the Leininger’s Sunrise Model for determining the cultural care needs of Syrian University Students in Türkiye. This qualitative study was conducted using the ethno-nursing research method. The sample of the study consisted of 19 Syrian undergraduate students. The Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) reporting guidelines were used in both the framing and reporting of this study to guarantee that sufficient details on the methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation were provided. The data examined under the 12 titles was assessed with the descriptive analysis method used in qualitative research. Students noted that care was provided voluntarily in their cultures, that families had the responsibility of providing care, that they needed professional and religious care simultaneously, and that the obstacles of receiving nursing care were language, gender, and privacy. Results in this study indicate that cultural values and beliefs had a significant impact on receiving medical care, and that professional and traditional treatments were used based on relevant cases.
