Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), has been an important cause of sudden in-hospital death. Studies have shown that the immune/inflammatory response plays an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular disease, with representative markers in the blood including the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune/inflammatory index (SII), etc. However, there is a variety of immune/inflammatory indicators. Moreover, most previous studies have been single-center investigations involving one or two indicators, with varying nature of cases, number of cases and study objectives, thereby making it difficult to reach consensus conclusions with good clinical guidelines. This article reviews the clinical value of immunoinflammatory indicators for VTE based on previous studies, including the diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. In conclusion, NLR provides promising predictive capability for the onset and prognosis of VTE and deserves extensive application in clinical practice. PLR also has certain diagnostic and prognostic value, but further studies are warranted to identify its reliability and stability. Monocytes, eosinophils and platelet-related indicators show some clinical association with VTE, although the predictive capabilities are mediocre. SII is of promising potential value for VTE and deserves further investigations. This review will provide new clues and valuable clinical guidance for the diagnosis and therapy of VTE.

Purpose The platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) has been extensively studied in various diseases. However, the relationship between PLR and hip fracture remains unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether PLR would be an independent prognostic factor in elderly hip fracture patients. Methods Between January 2014 and December 2018, a retrospective cohort study was conducted in a orthopaedic centre, China. A total of 460 hip fracture patients were included. PLR was calculated as the ratio of platelet to lymphocyte counts and divided into high PLR group (≥ 189) and low PLR group (< 189) by using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The relationship between PLR and one year all-cause mortality rate was assessed by univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard models. Further subgroup analysis stratified by different clinical and biological characteristics was performed to make the results more accurate. Results After a median follow-up of 32.0 months (range, 12.0-75.4), 92 patients (mortality rate: 20.0%) died within one year. PLR was significantly higher in dead patients compared with alive patients (p < 0.05), and high PLR group also had a high mortality rate (32.21% vs. 14.15%, p < 0.001). After multivariate adjustment, high PLR remained an independent predictor for one year all-cause mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 1.56, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-2.41, p = 0.041). Moreover, advanced age (HR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01-1.08), male (HR 1.62, 95% CI 1.06-2.45), CCI ≥ 2 (HR 2.83, 95% CI 1.64-4.89), conservative treatment (HR 5.94, 95% CI 3.71-9.73), low haemoglobin level (HR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.04), and low albumin level (HR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02-1.13) were independent risk factors for survival. Furthermore, subgroup analysis results were consistent with the main findings in most stratified groups. Conclusion This study highlights that high PLR (≥ 189) is associated with increased one year all-cause mortality in elderly hip fracture patients. As PLR is a simple indicator that can be calculated from the blood routine test, it can be easily performed in usual clinical practice.

Background Host inflammatory mediators are associated with tissue destruction in patients suffering from generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP). However, the correlations between neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with GAgP remain unknown. Methods Periodontal clinical parameters, including probing depth (PD), bleeding index (BI) and attachment loss (AL) were collected from patients with GAgP and healthy controls. Complete blood cells analyses were obtained; further, NLR and PLR were calculated using neutrophil, platelet, and lymphocyte counts. Smooth curve fitting and segmented regression models were used to analyze the roles and predictive value of NLR with GAgP. Results In total, 505 participants from a Chinese population were recruited, including 133 healthy controls and 372 patients with GAgP. Periodontal clinical parameters, NLR, and neutrophil counts were significantly higher in patients with GAgP than the control group. Moreover, NLR was positively correlated with the risk and clinical parameters of GAgP. When NLR < 3, the risk of GAgP increased by 20.6% for each 0.1 increase in NLR, reaching saturation when NLR > 3. An increase in NLR equivalent to 1 was associated with an increase in PD, BI, and AL by 0.41 mm, 0.26, and 0.57 mm, respectively. Notably, PLR did not show obvious correlations with GAgP. Conclusions NLR but not PLR may be a potential marker to identify GAgP in healthy individuals, particularly in a Chinese population.
