Multimedia communications is the field referring to the representation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of machine‐processable information expressed in multiple media, such as text, voice, graphics, image, audio and video. With the advent of high capacity storage devices powerful and yet economical computer workstations and high‐speed integrated services digital networks providing a variety of multimedia communications services are becoming not only technically but also economically feasible. Applications in medicine, education, travel, real‐estate, banking, insurance, administration and publishing and advertising are emerging at a fast pace. These applications are characterized by large multimedia documents that have to be communicated within very short delays. Computer‐controlled cooperative work, whereby a group of users can jointly view, create, edit and discuss multimedia documents is going to be characteristic of many transactions in the year 2000. In this paper, we review the activity in Multimedia Communications, Services and Applications.

This paper describes an open ended control architecture, optimized for ATH switching systems, which is in line with the Siemens/GPT Vision 0.N.E evolutionary concept.It uses the inherent large throughput capacity of ATH as an ideal interconnect for all distributed control elements.The control is structured in several distinct hierarchical layers with a common software application platform seperating the hardware implementation from features and services. This concept allows for the same ATH periphery complex to be used as a stand alone A!CM product or as an extention to existing Siemens and GPT switching systems for broadband applications.

High speed data communication is widely seen as one of the main driving forces towards broadband networks. Local Area Networks (LAN) are commonly used and the next generation of LANs, the Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) are in the introductory phase. To serve short-term communication demands, the use of MANs is also planned in the public network. Broadband ISDN (BISDN), where first trials are expected within the next few years, will offer ideal means to interconnect both, LANs as well as MANS without any restrictions in dis- tance.This paper presents the evolutionary path for the interconnection of data communication systems (based on LANs) first via MAN and later on (as soon as available) via the BISDN. As the BISDN aims at the integration of a conne~ti~nles~ service with connection-oriented services, a smooth evolution can be expected. MANs emerge for these services to become a part of the BISDN, maintaining the already installed equipment.
