Being in work or the equivalent is an important goal after allo-SCT and is used as an indicator of recovery. The aim was to elucidate occupational status and factors associated with work among SCT survivors. Adults in working age with a haematological disease (n = 177) were followed up within a median of 8 (range 28) years post allo-SCT. Predictors of not being in work at all or working part-time because of sick leave, disability pension or early old-age pension were analyzed using logistic regression analyses. At diagnosis, 82% of the participants were working full-time and 2% were on sick leave or old-age pension. At follow-up, 52% were working full-time, 27% were working part-time and 17% were on sick leave, disability pension or old-age pension. Not working at all was associated with multi-morbidity (P = 0.01) and poorer health (P = 0.00). Working part-time was associated with a higher age at diagnosis (P = 0.00), being a woman (P = 0.03), being born abroad (P = 0.03) and multi-morbidity (P = 0.00). In conclusion, the majority of survivors were in paid work at follow-up; however, a substantial number were not working or worked part-time.

The goals for regenerative medicine (RM) are focused on developing innovative tools in modern medicine. Recent progress has led to the development and clinical implementation of newer technologies, ranging from diagnostics to therapeutics for a wide variety of metabolic, degenerative, and infectious diseases.These include specific applications toward age‐ and genetic‐related human and animal dysfunctions and disorders. The focus of this review is to present, in a nutshell, the current status of adult stem cell therapy (CT) and tissue engineering (TE), including the challenges faced, progresses attained, and an optimistic view of the future. We will also provide our views on how the next 20+ years will potentially affect these RM‐driven innovations and how they are applied toward a variety of disease treatments, cures, and diagnostics.

The use of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has risen in recent years and additional increases are projected in the near-and long-term future. The complex nature of HCT, along with its potentially rigorous follow-up care requirements, presents numerous potential barriers to accessing this important service (for example, financial considerations, donor availability and sociodemographic factors). The distance between a patient and an HCT facility also appears to be an important factor in both HCT use and outcomes. We provide the first comprehensive and detailed evaluation of geographic access to HCT services for the adult (18+ years) and pediatric (0-17 years) populations in the United States. Population-level access is examined as well as detailed gender, race/ethnicity and age breakdowns. Generally, access to HCT services appears to be quite high throughout the United States, as 48%, 78.6% and 94.7% of the 18+ years age population has 30, 90 and 180 min access (respectively) to an adult HCT facility and 42.5%, 72% and 91.5% of the 0-17 years age population has 30, 90 and 180 min access (respectively) to a pediatric facility.
