The Nanocellulose Fibers from Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) Kombucha: Preparation and Characterization

Abstract: Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) is a by-product in the form of cellulose polymers produced by bacteria in the kombucha fermentation process. Until now, SCOBY products still have application limitations. Several world designers have succeeded in making works using fabrics based on SCOBY. The resulting fabric has a flexible texture and is brown like synthetic leather. Fabrics based on SCOBY are also considered cheap and more environmentally friendly with short production time. The use of SCOBY as… Show more

“…and Escherichia coli . In addition to these, nanocellulose fibers produced by the interaction of acetic acid bacteria and yeast through the kombucha fermentation process, known as Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY), can also be mentioned here [ 74 , 75 , 76 ]. SCOBY fibers have significant potential and are suitable for various applications (i.e., food, pharmaceutical, textiles, cosmetics) due to their special characteristics, such as strong gel film, high elasticity, and optimal deformation and comfort properties.…”

“…For instance, SCOBY fibers are considered a potential substitute for cotton, a raw material for fabrics, because they have a flexible texture and are brown like synthetic leather. Moreover, they can be considered cheap and environmentally friendly fibers due to their high degradation rate in the environment [ 75 ].…”

“…[18] However, BC is well known for its water-holding ability even after drying and low reactivity, aside from speedy yield, biodegradability, and purity. [19,20] In fact, the complex structure of BC has a limited degree of modification and application by the involvement of complicated activation: downsizing of fiber, plasma treatment, structure distortion, oxidation, etc. [21][22][23] Siliconization of BC was used in this study via activation of cellulose surface by etching and siliconization.…”
