The Namanereidinae (Polychaeta: Nereididae). Part 1. Taxonomy and phylogeny

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A cladistic analysis and taxonomic revision of the Namanereidinae (Nereididae: Polychaeta) is presented. The cladistic analysis utilising 39 morphological characters (76 apomorphic states) yielded 10,000 minimal-length trees and a highly unresolved Strict Consensus tree. However, monophyly of the Namanereidinae is supported and two clades are identified: Namalycastis containing 18 species and Namanereis containing 15 species. The monospecific genus Lycastoides, represented by L. alticola Johnson, is … Show more

“…In the Iberian Peninsula, it has been reported as Namalycastis brevicornis from the Tagus estuary [131] and as N. littoralis from the Basque Country [132]. However, in his revision of the subfamily Namanereidinae, Glasby [133] realized that specimens collected worldwide and referred to as this species and collected worldwide showed great variation in morphological characters. An informal group was created for all these taxa, but a thorough revision of material from the various locations is much needed to assess the number of species forming it.…”

“…For characters relating to parapodia the terminology of Hylleberg et al (1986) has been used, following later modifications by Hutchings and Reid (1990), Glasby (1999) and Bakken (2002) as implied in the Nereididae DELTA database (Wilson et al, 2003). End-view drawings of parapodia ( Fig.…”

“…Remarks. No further specimens of this species have been found since specimens examined by Glasby (1999 Diagnosis. Neanthes species having three notopodial lobes/ligules (i.e., prechaetal notopodial lobe well developed) in anterior parapodia; broad band of paragnaths in Areas VII-VIII continuous with those in Areas V, VI.…”

“…This species was first reported from Lizard Island by Glasby (1999), who described it as a species group because of the large intraspecific variation; component species within the group were not named. A subsequent combined molecular/morphometric study of this species group in India showed the existence of multiple cryptic species within a region (Magesh et al 2014).…”
