Chapter 12 deals with questions of technique in certain virtuoso pieces as well as the late Douze etudes.The book includes a number of blackand-white illustrations as well as twelve color plates of appropriate paintings. Unfortunately, these illustrations are generally too small to do much more than identify the specific painting in question. There is a useful glossary of terms found in Debussy's piano music and a thorough bibliography.This book is the first in-depth study of Debussy's piano music since E. Robert Schmitz's The Piano Works of Claude Debussy (New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1950; reissued, New York: Dover, 1966). As such, it is a must for every serious pianist and teacher of piano. It is no less valuable for nonpianists and for those who enjoy discovering the interaction of the arts.
