The mosquito Aedes (Aedimorphus) vexans arabiensis as a probable vector bridging the West Nile virus between birds and horses in Barkedji (Ferlo, Senegal)

Abstract: Active catches of adult females of Aedes vexans arabiensis Patton, (Diptera: Culicidae) Patton by nets or aspirator, were conducted in 2003 and 2004 in the vegetation at the edge of temporary ponds in Barkedji, Senegalese Ferlo area. Two hundred and forty-one engorged females were captured, dissected and the gut content adsorbed on a Whatman filter paper and analysed using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique to determinate the bloodmeal origin. Results indicated that Ae v. arabiensis fed pr… Show more

“…Of the 319 meals identified, 156 (48.9%) were mixed meals and were mostly taken in August (53.85%). Similar observations have already been made by [19] and [23]. This high rate of mixed meals could be explained by the fact that August is the period corresponding to the peak abundance of Ae.…”

“…These self-defense reflexes developed by such few animals available and overexposed to the bites of a high population density of Ae. vexans arabiensis , fastly growing thanks to stocks of eggs from the previous rainy season, may even increase the rate of interrupted blood meals, favoring shifts between host species [23]. Thus, August seems to be the most favorable period for the spreading of the pathogens between hosts by Ae.…”
