We present here our methodological approach applied to the study of Egyptian inks in Late Antiquity. It is based on an interdisciplinary strategy, bringing together a variety of disciplines from humanities and natural sciences, and it aims at systematically collecting a statistically relevant amount of data regarding the composition of the inks. The application of a wellestablished, non-invasive protocol that includes near-infrared imaging and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy for in situ measurements enables the identification and characterisation of inks dating from the end of Late Antiquity onwards. However, sometimes this method limits our understanding when characterising more ancient inks. Trying to overcome these limitations, the potential of a new device for the characterisation of organic compounds is here explored by conducting preliminary tests on mock samples. In this work, we present the results from 77 codicological units that include some of the earliest manuscripts of our corpus that presently lists 159 units.

The apocryphal account of the birth and childhood of Mary, mother of Jesus (and to a lesser degree Jesus himself) known most commonly as the Protevangelium of James is one of the most influential early Christian texts outside of the New Testament. It is witnessed substantially in the Greek manuscript tradition as well as in several other languages. In the process of its transmission in Greek from the late third century or the fourth century into the late medieval/early modern period, various titular formulae were attached to the text. This article examines the earliest manuscript witness for Prot. Jas, Papyrus Bodmer V, and argues that the title present here is reflective of the complexities surrounding the perceived genre and function of early Christian literature in addition to the creation and continuation of traditions encompassing authorial identity and legitimacy. The Prot. Jas demonstrates well the hermeneutical weight often carried by titular paratexts as literature is transmitted, and regardless of whether P. Bodmer V represents continuity or evolution in this regard, it offers a window onto the flexibility of genre and its representation in early Christianity.

Cet article se propose d’investiguer la relation entre culture et religion dans le contexte du monachisme chrétien des origines (à partir du IVème siècle). L’exercice d’analyse a pour but de mieux comprendre les problèmes posés par l’emploi de ces deux concepts en référence à des réalités éloignées dans le temps et dans l’espace, mais aussi de rendre compte de la nature complexe du monachisme lui-même, observable comme phénomène éminemment religieux et pourtant également culturel. On pourrait espérer qu’en focalisant le regard sur leurs extrêmes il soit possible d’augmenter la netteté du contraste entre ces dimensions supposément différentiées de l’humain, de sorte à les rendre plus visibles : en ce sens, afin de mieux déceler la distinction culture / religion dans sa récurrence historique, il est sans doute utile d’analyser l’expérience monastique, qui constitue une réalité de l’antiquité méditerranéenne où la tension religieuse se manifeste avec une perspicuité toute particulière. L’enjeu – et donc l’utilité – d’une telle démarche serait de vérifier si la différentiation entre culture et religion – supposons qu’elle ait un sens aujourd’hui – résiste à une rétrospection de ce type, ou à tout le moins de voir comment elle se conçoit dans un passé relativement lointain et dans un milieu où le religieux est aussi régime de vie prétendument « total » : car, on le sait, plus on remonte en arrière dans le temps, plus la ligne de division entre les deux notions (quelle que soit la définition adoptée) devient floue.
