The Modulation of Oxytocin and Cortisol Levels in Major Depression Disorder and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract: There is a progressive trend in the current literature in understanding the central effects of oxytocin, which besides its classical roles in parturition and lactation, seems to exert some facilitatory effects in most of the neuropsychiatric disorders. Thus, it seems that oxytocin is mainly linked to the neuropsychiatric disorders where the social component is more or less affected and it has also strong correlations with the stress-related mechanisms and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In addition,… Show more

“…It has been shown that the patients with a major depressive disorder (MDD) have high serum levels of cortisol [ 67 ] and reduced levels of oxytocin [ 68 ]. The results obtained in another study, conducted with a similar design to the previous one, provides additional evidence and further consolidates this strong correlation between the brain and the digestive tract [ 69 ].…”

“…Considering the myriad functions fulfilled by the gut microflora [ 131 ] and the close link between the brain [ 25 , 132 ] and digestive tract [ 33 , 133 ], there have been relatively few reports aiming to demonstrate how OS gradually induces dysbiosis. This section focuses on the studies and hypotheseses that clearly demonstrate how OS disrupts host eubiosis [ 134 ].…”

“…The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, which constitutes the core of stress-related mechanisms, was left behind [ 227 ]. Unfortunately, there has been little acceptance regarding the modulatory effect of oxytocin, or cortisol [ 228 ]. It has been recently demonstrated that patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) had fluctuating levels of oxytocin and cortisol fluctuates [ 229 , 230 ].…”
