The Minimal Nutritional Requirements of Lactobacillus Bifidus

Abstract: The microbiologic flora of the intestine of the breast-fed infant is characterized by the predominance of Lactobacillus bifidus. Investigations of the factors responsible for the establishment of this organism in the intestine of the nursling have been hampered by the lack of suitable isolation and cultivation procedures. Recently Norris et al. (1950) described a semisynthetic medium, supplemented with most of the factors known to stimulate the growth of lactobacilli, that will support the growth of L. bifidus… Show more

“…As shown in Table 3, they require carbohydrate and bicarbonate (or CO2 gas) as carbon sources, but organic acids, fatty acids and amino acids are not effective as carbon sources. Among the amino acids only cysteine or cystine is reported to be essential as nitrogen source by Hassinen (9), while it was reported that several other amino acids were required for growth (32,34). Concerning requirement of vitamins, Hassinen (9) reported that pantothenic acid and biotin were essential for bifidobacteria of baby origin.…”

Concerning requirement of vitamins, Hassinen (9) reported that pantothenic acid and biotin were essential for bifidobacteria of baby origin. However, in addition to these, several vitamins such as pantethine and riboflavine were reported to be required by many strains (6,24).…”

“…As shown in Table 1, B. bifidum required B12 for growth. Pantothenate is recognized as one factor that has been shown to be absolutely required for bifidobacterial growth (10). Gyorgy and Rose (8) claimed that pantothenic acid itself was rather inactive as a growth promoter for B. bifidum, and pantetheine, a derivative of pantothenic acid, was the actual growth factor.…”

Biotin is another vitamin whose requirement by bifidobacteria is widely accepted (6,7,10). However, vitamin B12 as a growth factor is unknown.…”
