The Middle Miocene of the Fore-Carpathian Basin (Poland, Ukraine and Moldova)

Abstract: Studies of Miocene sediments in the Fore-Carpathian Basin, conducted by geologists from the University of Warsaw have provided new insights on the distribution of the facies infilling the basin, particularly in the forebulge and back-bulge zones. The origin of the large-scale sand bodies, evaporitic deposits and large-scale organic buildups is discussed, described and verified. These deposits originated in variable, shallow marine settings, differing in their water chemistry and the dynamics of sedimentary pro… Show more

“…This was possibly also the age of the easternmost expansion of the Fore-Carpathian Basin ( Rögl, 1998 ). The end of this stage is dated as 12.82 Ma ( Hír et al, 2016 ) or 12.65 Ma ( Palcu et al, 2015 ) and characterized by a salinity crisis and mass extinction of biota ( Wysocka et al, 2016 ): this provides a well-constrained upper age boundary for the specimen. The specimen was taken from a facies of siltstones with high clay content and without gypsum.…”

“…This was a foreland basin developing in front of the Carpathian orogeny, which, at present, stretches over a distance of ~1300 km, from Vienna in Austria, through Czechia, Poland and Ukraine, to Romania (e.g. Oszczypko et al 2006, Wysocka et al 2016. The Polish segment of the Carpathian Foredeep (PCF) is ca 300 km long and, outside the Carpathians, varies in width from a few kilometers near to Kraków, up to 90 km further east.…”
