Dental, mandibular, and postcranial specimens of Megacricetodon yei n. sp., are described. The new specimens, including the complete dentition, mandible, and partial forelimb and hindlimb, represent the most complete materials known for the genus, provide valuable information concerning the interspecific variation of the genus, and lead to the reassessment of the suprageneric position of Megacricetodon.Megacricetodon yei is characterized by having medium-size, clearly split anterocone of M1, presence of the labial spur of the anterolophule and the posterior spur of the paracone in some M1s, medium to long mesoloph in M1-2, frequent occurrences of double protolophules, transverse or posteriorly directed metalophule of M2, and single anteroconid of the m1. Megacricetodon yei is more closely related to Megacricetodon (5 Aktaumys) dzhungaricus than to any other species of Megacricetodon, but is more derived than the latter. Based on the new information, the validity of the genus Aktaumys is discussed.The postcranial features of Megacricetodon yei show clear adaptations for terrestrial habits, but as in many ground-dwelling rodents living in burrows, it could also climb or dig. The associated fauna has been correlated to Tongxin fauna from the adjacent part of China and the Belometchetskya fauna of north Caucasus, equivalent to early Middle Miocene age, or MN 6 correlative. The stage of evolution of Megacricetodon yei is consistent with the faunal correlation.

Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 57 (1): 1-20.We describe new dental material of Eurolagus fontannesi from the Late Miocene (Early Vallesian, MN 9) lignite beds of Bełchatów A (central Poland), which is the northernmost occurrence of this lagomorph. This material considerably in− creases the sample size of this rare genus and species. We review the systematic position of Eurolagus and argue that it is not an ochotonid, but represents a terminal taxon of an independently evolved stem lineage of Lagomorpha. The enamel of the molars, here studied for the first time, exhibits a relatively thin decussating external and a radial internal layer, and in general resembles the palaeolagine lagomorphs (Palaeolagus) rather than the archaeolagine leporids (Hypolagus) or advanced ochotonids (Ochotona). The dental wear features of Eurolagus fontannesi indicate that the species was a sylvan mixed−feeder. This agrees with the Bełchatów A paleoenvironment, which is best approximated as the kind of mixed mesophytic forest now encountered in the Caucasus, Iran, and India. The extinction of Eurolagus was probably related to the noticeable faunal change following the increased cooling of the European climate during the Late Miocene. The first indicator of this event can be observed in Bełchatów A, marked by the immigration of Microtocricetus and the absence of Neocometes.

Platybelodon danovi, the type species of the genus, was originally described from Belomechetskaya (Russia), correlated to the early Astaracian, MN 6 (Pickford et al, 2000). This species can be considered rather primitive because of its exclusively trilophodont intermediate molars.…”

Presented here are the tetralophodont proboscidean remains from the late Miocene locality Pikermi (Attica, Greece). The study of the Pikermi tetralophodons and their comparison with other relevant specimens revealed that the late Miocene species 'Tetralophodon' atticus and 'Mastodon' grandincisivus are synonymous. The morphological characters of the Pikermi specimens, as well as of those attributed to 'Mastodon' grandincisivus, are consistent with the North American shovel-tusker Amebelodon (Konobelodon). However, generic rank revision of Konobelodon at generic rank is deemed appropriate. The observed differences between the type species Konobelodon britti and the Pikermi tetralophodon indicate that the latter belongs to a distinct species, Konobelodon atticus. This species encompasses the Turolian tetralophodont shovel-tuskers from eastern Europe-western Asia. The paleogeographic distribution and biostratigraphy of Konobelodon atticus are discussed, as well as the evolution and the possible migrational scenarios of Konobelodon.
