The metasternal and Brindley's Glands of Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

Abstract: -Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva is the most important vector of the Chagas' disease in the semiarid zones of North-eastern Brazil. Adult bugs have two main pairs of exocrine glands, the metasternal and the Brindley's glands, which release volatiles possibly with defense, alarm and/or mating functions. To date, anatomical and histological studies of the metasternal and the Brindley's glands in the genus Triatoma are scarce and, considering the relevance of these exocrine glands, the present work aimed at studying … Show more

“…Reduviidae have glands that release compounds associated with defensive behavior, alarm, and mating (Weirauch 2003(Weirauch , 2004(Weirauch , 2006bVitta et al 2009). However, the current study is the Þrst record of a glandular epidermis associated with wax secretion in Reduviidae, which calls for further studies to explain the physiological or ecological functions of the wax released onto the body surface during speciÞc developmental stage of H. angulosus.…”

“…The chemical blends that compose sexual and aggregation pheromones have been characterized for several triatomine species [43][44][45]. As well, relevant host-emitted odorants have been identified [46].…”

“…They are ventrally located at the anterior margin of each metacoxal cavity [41]. Each gland consists of an unbranched secretory tubule and a small pear-shaped reservoir opening laterally to the sternal apophyseal pit [42,43]. The sac-like paired Brindley's glands are dorsally located, extending into the lateral portion of the second abdominal segment and opening onto the metathoracic epimeron [39,41,44,45].…”
