This paper presents archaeological and analytical data on metal artefacts from Hüseyindede (Çorum, Turkey), dated to the Old Hittite period (ca 16th century BC). Hüseyindede, which is set in a rural landscape, demonstrates continuity in alloying traditions from the Early Bronze Age III (ca 26th/25th–22nd/21st century BC) and the Assyrian Trading Colonies period (20th–18th century BC) to the emergence of the Hittites. In addition to known alloying practices of the period, the site presents, for the first time, evidence of the existence of copper-nickel alloys, namely cupronickels, which so far have been documented only at the Late Bronze Age capital of the Hittites, Boğazköy/Hattuša. The Hüseyindede cupronickel objects now pinpoint the presence of this technology to regions spreading out from the Halys basin from the Old Kingdom Hittite period.

Such a confederate structure of the Hittite kingdom is attested in the so-called "bronze tablet" of Boğazköy (Schachner 2019;Zimmermann et al 2010). However still, in spite of the extensive research on Boğazköy and on other major towns of the Hittite Empire, our knowledge on the regional kingdoms such as Arzawa, semi-independent or vassals of the Hittite system, is still minimal, with considerable controversy even relating to the localization of their capitals.…”

In Anatolian archaeology, as it is the case in the neighbouring regions of the Near East and Aegean, the Bronze Age is considered in three consecutive stages, however, defined not in accordance with metallurgical achievements, but on changing modalities in social and economic structures. Before the beginning of the Early Bronze Age there were fully established farming communities across almost all of Anatolia, though subsisting mainly on family-level farming with no indication of complex social structuring. Likewise, during the final stages of the Late Chalcolithic there was a notable decrease in population, particularly in Central and Western Anatolia. In this respect, the south-eastern parts of Anatolia differ considerably from the rest of the peninsula, developing a complex socio-economic model in connection with the bordering regions of Syro-Mesopotamia. This pattern changed by incoming migration from the north, with subsequent dense population patterns in the eastern and western parts of the peninsula. Following the reorganization and consolidation of this system, the Early Bronze Age is characterized by urbanisation, institutionalized long-distance trade, intensification and revolutionized agricultural and weaving practices. The urban model that developed in Anatolia differs considerably from those of the Near East both in size and in organization. The Middle Bronze Age is marked by state formations, which by the Late Bronze Age developed into empires with their own foreign policies. Concerning the role of metals, copper and lead were used since the Neolithic and arsenic bronze by the Late Chalcolithic. The Bronze Age may be viewed as a time of mass production and development of complex technologies in casting, alloying and forming.

Η παρούσα έρευνα αποτελεί μία διεπιστημονική μελέτη γραπτών κειμένων και αρχαιομετρικών αναλύσεων μεταλλικών αντικειμένων της 2ης χιλιετίας π.Χ. από την Εγγύς Ανατολή. Η συνθετική προσέγγιση που ακολουθείται προσφέρει πολύτιμες πληροφορίες σχετικά με τις μεταλλουργικές πρακτικές, τις γενικότερες προτιμήσεις στη χρήση των μετάλλων και τον ρόλο του ανθρώπινου παράγοντα στις διαδικασίες κατασκευής και αποτίμησης.Η διακίνηση, η ανταλλαγή και το εμπόριο των μετάλλων είναι ζητήματα που συνηθέστερα προσεγγίζονται από δύο κύριες, αλλά χωρίς (φανερά) άμεση σχέση μεταξύ τους, πλευρές: τις γραπτές πηγές από τη μία και τα αρχαιομεταλλουργικά και γεωλογικά δεδομένα από την άλλη. Οι περισσότερες παλαιότερες μελέτες επικεντρώνονται σε μία από τις δύο αυτές πλευρές και συγκεκριμένα σε ένα μέταλλο, μία δεδομένη περιοχή ή εποχή. Ωστόσο, η παρούσα έρευνα αναλαμβάνει μία πιο ολιστική και διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση για τη μελέτη της ανταλλαγής και χρήσης των μετάλλων, συνδυάζοντας πληροφορίες από γραπτές πηγές, αρχαιομεταλλουργικές αναλύσεις, την πειραματική αρχαιολογία, γεωλογικές μελέτες των σχετικών περιοχών και την εθνοαρχαιολογία.Οι γραπτές πηγές που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν είναι τα Παλαιο-Ασσυριακά κείμενα από το Κανές στην Κεντρική Ανατολία, τα οποία αναφέρονται στο εμπόριο που διεξαγόταν μεταξύ περίπου 2000-1715 π.Χ., και οι επιστολές από την Αμάρνα της Αιγύπτου που χρονολογούνται στα μέσα του 14ου αιώνα π.Χ. και αναφέρονται στην ανταλλαγή δώρων για την εξυπηρέτηση των διεθνών διπλωματικών σχέσεων μεταξύ βασιλέων της Ύστερης Εποχής του Χαλκού στην Εγγύς Ανατολή. Οι πληροφορίες που συλλέχθηκαν από τα μελετημένα κείμενα αφορούν στις μετακινήσεις και στις ποσότητες και ποικιλίες των μετάλλων που μεταφέρονταν και χρησιμοποιήθηκαν σε βασικές στατιστικές αναλύσεις με σκοπό την παρατήρηση προτιμήσεων στη χρήση και την ανταλλαγή των μετάλλων. Επιπλέον, τα συλλογικά δεδομένα από τις χημικές, ή άλλου είδους, αναλύσεις αντικειμένων και σχετικών δειγμάτων μελετήθηκαν και αξιολογήθηκαν ως προς το κατά πόσο ανταποκρίνονται με τα καταγεγραμμένα χαρακτηριστικά και τις κατεργασίες των μετάλλων. Ιδιαίτερη προσοχή δίνεται στη σημασία της εξωτερικής εμφάνισης, και πιο συγκεκριμένα του χρώματος, στην αναγνώριση ενός μετάλλου, των ιδιοτήτων, της σύστασης και της ποιότητάς του και πως αυτή σχετιζόταν με ή επηρέαζε την επιλογή για σκοπούς εμπορικούς ή ανταλλαγής δώρων.Από τη συλλογή πληροφοριών από τα γραπτά κείμενα και σε συνδυασμό με τα δεδομένα από τις αρχαιομεταλλουργικές αναλύσεις μεταλλικών αντικειμένων εξήχθησαν ποικίλα συμπεράσματα που αφορούν στην κατεργασία και στη χρήση των μετάλλων. Πρώτον, ο καθαρισμός του χρυσού ήταν πραγματικά εφικτός, αλλά πιθανότερα δεν χρησιμοποιούταν πολύ συχνά λόγω του ότι το «φαίνεσθαι» ήταν σημαντικότερο από το «είναι». Δεύτερον, ο άργυρος, και συγκεκριμένα ο εξευγενισμένος άργυρος, χρησιμοποιούταν ως νόμισμα. Τρίτον, ο αρσενικούχος χαλκός συνέχισε να χρησιμοποιείται κατά την Παλαιο-Ασσυριακή εποχή. Την ίδια εποχή ο κασσίτερος εισαγόταν και κραματωνόταν κατά προτίμηση με καθαρό χαλκό για την παραγωγή μπρούτζου, το κατεξοχήν κράμα της Ύστερης Εποχής του Χαλκού. Επιπλέον, η παρούσα μελέτη υποστηρίζει ότι ο σίδηρος περιγραφόταν μονάχα με μία ομάδα λέξεων, περαιτέρω προτείνοντας ότι οι υπόλοιπες λέξεις που έχουν συσχετιστεί με το μέταλλο αυτό θα πρέπει να αναθεωρηθούν. Τέλος, ο συνδυασμός πληροφοριών από κείμενα, αρχαιομετρικές αναλύσεις καθώς και την πειραματική αρχαιολογία αναδεικνύουν τη σημασία των φυσικών χαρακτηριστικών και της εξωτερικής εμφάνισης – παραγόντων που συχνά παραβλέπονται – για την αναγνώριση, την κατασκευή και την αποτίμηση των μετάλλων και των μεταλλικών αντικειμένων.
