Birds are one of the animals most widely used by humans and are highly valued as pets. The present work reports the use of wild birds as pets in the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba State (PB), Brazil. The owners' choice and perceptions of the species ecology was assessed as well. The methodology employed included unstructured and semi-structured interviews, guided tours and direct observations. A total of 26 bird species distributed among ten families and four orders were identified. The most frequently encountered order was Passeriformes (76.9%), with a predominance of the family Emberizidae (34.6%). The specimens kept as pets were principally obtained in public markets or between the breeders themselves. The popularity of birds as pets, compounded by the inefficiency of official controls over the commerce of wild animals has stimulated the illegal capture and breeding of wild birds in Campina Grande.

(A brief review of the medical use of fauna in Brazil: conservationist, historical, and pharmacological aspects) -The treatment of human and animal aliments by using drugs based on extracts obtained from animals, or ultimately derived from them, is known as zootherapy. Although this is a relatively common practice, studies on this subject are relatively scarce when compared to those that are focused on traditional plant-based medicines. In Brazil, 326 animals are exploited for medicinal purposes, most of which are wild species. The number of literature records on the medicinal uses of animals is much lower than those on the use of medicinal plants and their implications, which suggests the need to develop more research on the topic. Among the many factors that highlight the importance of a greater understanding of zootherapy, are: historical perspectives, aspects related to conservation, the validation of traditional medicines, and the difficulties in developing research on the medicinal fauna. In this study, we provide a brief discussion of each topic.

The use of animals, plants, and fungi as a major source of local medicine for people's well-being in rural areas has been documented in different parts of the world, and has also been recorded in urban environments. In urban settings, the trade of wildlife-based medicinal products is concentrated in local and traditional markets, where various species of medicinal plants and animals are commercialized. The commercialization and use of biological resources as remedies encompass cultural, social, and economic aspects and bear important implications for conservation, especially in relation to the most heavily exploited species. This chapter reviews the literature on commercialization of medicinal animals in local markets, focusing on urban zootherapy and on the social actors involved in these practices. In doing so, we hope to highlight the importance of further research on the topic and to explore ways through which conservation and management initiatives can improve dialog with resource users and traders.
