“…Interestingly, Japanese flounder hepcidins were differentially affected by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection; Hep-JF1 expression was induced in liver but not in kidney and Hep-JF2 expression was up-modulated in kidney but not in liver [20]. Bo et al [26] observed an increase in both Oryzias melastigma hepcidins (OM-hep1 and OM-hep2) in liver and spleen after Vibrio parahaemolyticus administration and, as in our case, the response was faster in the case of type 1 hepcidin. Induction of hepcidin expression after bacterial or LPS administration could vary as a function of the type of hepcidin in species presenting more than one form.…”

“…Some have been reported to be present in the mucous, suggesting they are part of primary defense against infectious agents, and as in higher vertebrates, have an essential role in innate immune response [7,8]. The hepcidin transcript has been identified as well as its expression in different teleost fish, as for example the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), the marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma), the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides), the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) [9][10][11][12]. Surprisingly, the eight cysteines are preserved in all these species, which emphasizes the relevance these residues have in the activity and configuration adopted by this peptide.…”
