The manufacture and characterization of auxetic, self-curling, and self-folding woven fabrics by helical auxetic yarns

Abstract: Auxetic fabrics with traditional filaments and auxetic structures have been provided by knitting method; however, the auxetic behavior and applicability of woven fabric with auxetic yarns remain to be studied. Thus, the paper aims to present the special characters of woven fabrics with heliacal auxetic yarns. Auxetic yarns with the maximum value of Poisson's ratio −0.88 were used as weft yarns to do the weaving by the semi-automatic loom. Then the properties of the fabrics have been tested and analyzed under t… Show more

“…Highly stretchable auxetic fabrics have also been proposed and fabricated by researchers using helical auxetic yarn [189,190]. Woven fabrics formed with helical auxetic yarns showed self-folding and self-curling behavior in the natural state [189]. When stretched, this woven fabric showed the maximum Poisson's ratio value of −0.3 at a strain value of 200%.…”

“…They pointed out the yarn arrangement, yarn properties, weft yarn type, weave structure and yarn helical structure have significant effect on the NPR of the fabric. Then, Du's group reported a self-curling and self-folding auxetic woven fabric experimentally with the maximum NPR of -0.585 [32,33]. It was noted that such woven fabrics demonstrate a good auxeticity, low elastic deformation, high flexibility and breaking load.…”

“…More recently, Liu et al. 20 compared the auxetic performance of woven fabrics made from pointed twill and diamond twill to that of the plain fabrics. The maximum NPR achieved was −0.3 under diagonal tensile loading with the strain of 200%.…”
