The making of the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting

Abstract: The authors, who jointly serve as the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) executive, reflect on the three‐year history of the OAI. Three years of technical work recently culminated in the release of a stable production version 2 of the OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI‐PMH). This technical product, the work that led up to it, and the process that made it possible have attracted some favor from the digital library and information community. The paper explores a number of factors in the history of the OAI tha… Show more

“…Most notable among these tools, which serve as a middleware layer between the repository and the clients, are (i) Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata harvesting (OAI-MPH) [14] which is a protocol that provides a technology-independent framework for retrieving documents or resources, thus enabling interoperability among systems; and (ii) Simple Query Interface (SQI) [8] that is formed by a set of abstract methods based on web services. SQI is also is neutral in terms of the format of results as well as query language.…”

“…As such, the XML Signature syntax follows the scenario outlined in Row 5 of Table 3. [23] has been widely adopted as an approach to facilitate discovery of distributed resources. The OAI-PMH achieves this by providing a simple, yet powerful, framework for metadata harvesting.…”

“…The solution is based on the combination of standards that have emerged recently. The standards that play a core role in the design include: the MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration (MPEG-21 DID) [17,18], the MPEG-21 Digital Item Identification (MPEG-21 DII) [5,19], the W3C XML Signature Syntax and Processing standard [2], and the Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) [23]. The core characteristics of the solution are:…”

“…These technical developments were accompanied by the Open Archives Initiative and the Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) released on January 2001 to ensure system interoperability. 1 The Internet and the Web provide basic platforms for the individual distribution of research documents (e.g. through personal homepages or departmental servers).…”
