The Mainz Cluster Trap

Abstract: When cluster ions are stored by electromagnetic forces they are available in the gas phase for extended preparations and investigations. Over the last decade a Penning trap (Ion Cyclotron Resonance) apparatus has been constructed and further developed with respect to metal cluster research at the Institute of Physics at Mainz. It allows to capture and accumulate ion bunches injected from an external cluster source and to manipulate the ions' motion, i.e. select and center the clusters of interest. The interact… Show more

“…The experiments were carried out at the ClusterTrap experiment [45] which is dedicated to the investigation of sizeselected clusters by use of a Penning trap. It consists of a laser-vaporization ion source [46] which creates neutral and singly charged metal clusters.…”

“…A detailed description of the experimental setup and various aspects of the use of Penning traps has already been given elsewhere [13][14][15]. In general, the experimental procedure consists of the following steps: -The cluster ions are produced in a Smalley-type laser vaporization source [16,17].…”

“…The experimental setup has been been reviewed recently [15,16]. The clusters are produced by laser vaporization of a metal wire in the presence of a helium gas pulse [17].…”
