“…Schmitt et al [160] additionally considered the role of crystal water in CuCl 2 • 2H 2 O as compared to anhydrous CuCl 2 and showed that it leads to a dramatic change in magnetic behaviour. Eriochalcite was known as a 3D antiferromagnet [161,162], which can be explained by the relative orientation of the isolated CuCl 2 O 2 plaquettes. The loss of water leads to a switch of the magnetically active orbital, thereby causing a dramatic change in magnetic properties between both compounds.…”

“…The results of susceptibility measurements, density functional and model calculations can be consistently understood from a reorientation of the magnetically active Cu orbital driven by the hydration. Regarding the well known 3D magnetic nature of CuCl 2 •2H 2 O, 6,7 the quasi 1D behavior of the water free compound CuCl 2 is rather surprising: CuCl 2 is a J 1 -J 2 Heisenberg chain model compound with FM nearest neighbor (NN) exchange J 1 and AFM next-nearest neighbor (NNN) exchange J 2 . According to the estimated J 2 /J 1 ∼ −1.5 we predict a helical magnetic order below the observed transition at 24 K. Earlier studies 8,9 that tried to model CuCl 2 as a spin 1/2 chain found considerable deviations from a 1D behavior since in these investigations only NN AFM coupling was considered.…”
